The subsequent UOA showed that it had very wear signifying that the oil has done its job. Mind you, that is a very light oil that many people complain of having thinning issues. Many were befuddled and concluded that RP oil can be good too if used on structurally very strong engines. Then finally there was this unifying theory by the oil gurus who came out in unison saying any engine oil can be used as long as you change it at the regular intervals. Maz75 Neutral Newbie February 27, 2004 Share February 27, 2004 This is just a personel opinion of mine, i used to use Shell Helix Ultra 5W 40 proposed by Mazda svc centre, its priced at $86.50.I am not saying the oil is no good but after i changed to mobil 5w 50 priced at $69 is even working better for my car since the last oil change. I will take a relatively inexpensive synthetic that meets all the ACEA and API standards and change it out every 5,000km over an overpriced synthetic and change out every 10,000km. Genie47 1st Gear February 27, 2004 Share February 27, 2004 ONe thing I know is that the advertised big oil want to keep themselves special and keep hyping on the extended drain interval to make the product unique. They make these claims so as to challenge the consumer to try or sue them when it fails. They can afford it anyway. As for small to medium oil blenders, they cannot afford all that. They will not give any extended drain nos like XXXXXXX miles but usually say that the oil has extended drain capability. So many of us who buy such cheap oil go for the safe 5k-7.5k km OCI to be safe. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

To know if a particular oil is good or not, you need to obtain the Material Safty Data Sheet (MSDS) for that oil. The data sheet will tell you what is the flash point of the oil. The higher the flash point the better. A high flash point indicates that the base oil is of good quality. Minimum, the flash point should be at least 400 degrees Fahrenheit. There are other specifications to look out for. Until now, sperm whale oil is used on the space shuttle due to its great capacity to keep its lube quality w/o being fried to a crisp. Much more pleasant compared to the syn oil we use. Not toxic also. Forgot to say, the official name is spermaceti. BUT, as they are cheaper, you would not feel the pinch of changing them at shorter intervals. eg. Most big names who are into F1 sponsorship sell their oil for about S$85 +/- per 4L bottle. Equally good fully synthetic oil from companies who are not into F1 sell their 5L bottle for about S$55. Do the maths. You must understand that besides lubricating moving parts within the engine, the oil must trap all the dirt and dust from your air intake that the air filter missed. So the longer you keep the oil in your car, the less effective it is. Try listening to the engine after an oil change, at 5000km after oil change and at 8000km after oil change. Infact you should be able to feel the difference by the seat of your pants.
