i've used Helix Ultra due to KM only available oil, today they have their own in-house (OEM from Idemitsu). Now i'm basically using Mobil 1, feel that it's better and FC is slightly better as compared to using Shell. Basis of comparison, same fuel, same driving pattern and mileage seemed to improve with Mobil. Just my 2cents worth. Never used other oils as mentioned by others.

well, in my previous EK, i used to get only 470~480km per tank... that was before I switched to Mobil 1. Surprisingly, I managed to get approx 530~550km per tank using Mobil 1 (0W-40). I changed my petrol to Mobil also..(was using Shell 98 & XO then) even slightly better mileage. I averaged 570~580km per tank after that. That means a 13.5 km/l then on an average of 43l/tank (EK tank, max 45 liters) Sadly, i can't seem to get that kind of FC anymore with my ES. Sob, Sob....

Engine oil weight will decide FC. Lower weight oil will give better FC than higher weight oil. For daily driving. 30wt oil is very good in SG. Each trip takes around 1hr the most. You need the oil to warm up really fast to reach operating temperature.

If you go up north to give your engine an real workout, 40wt oil is the absolute minimum you should use. 50wt on all counts is too heavy for most applications. Yes it protects well but most of the wear happens at startup. It is hard to move 50wt oil when cold.

Supersonic

i tink 30wt is not recommended for the modern multi-valve, high compression engines esp in blistering hot SG city driving. i personally wouldn't touch anything below 40wt to prevent premature engine wear. for my turbo, i'm even looking for 50wt.

(edited)

A turbocharged car can take up to 50wt but for the sake of economy and faster warm up, 40wt is OK. Blistering heat in SG is supposed to be taken by the oil. Many Toyota owners are switching to the 0W30 of Castrol SLX-A3 and RP 10W30 or 5W30. With such short trips lasting not more than an hr they reap the benefits of better FC because their cars are indeed engineered for better FC.

But it depends. There was this guy who used RP 5W30 for his WRX. His engine wear results came back very good. Some have surmised that structurally stronger engines can take even the lower wt oil.

Actually the best gauge is the users manual. I dunno for your car but Toyota gives an oil range for some operating temperatures up to 40 deg C. Those wanting better FC go for the lowest wt recommended at -20 to 40 deg C.

For protection and FC, the Castrol SLX-A3 is good. Check BITOG report from a local user of Castrol SLX-A3 0W30 and RP 10W30 here:
