Dear Subaru owners,

I met my SE yesterday to complain about my Subaru's gear problem - unable to smoothly engage my reverse all the time despite of stopping totally, waiting 3-5 sec, engaging 3rd/5th gear (is 3 & 5 the magic numbers?) before engaging reverse gear despite of highlighting the matter to MI. MI supposedly to have solved the problem by replacing the disc plates but when I brought my car to my own mechanic, the gear box is brand new/untouched. I wonder how MI managed to change the disc plates without opening the whole gearbox?

SE kept saying this few sentences:

1) I have other customers who do not have this gear problem. I wonder how many? That is why I started this poll.

2) The gear mechanism cannot synchronize properly & Subaru is unable to solve the problem (So now SE acknowledges there is a problem!)

I hope you will kindly respond to this poll because I would like to know how many of you suffer from this problem.

My MY03 rexy have problem engaging reverse gear occassionally. Sometimes it engages Reverse but gives a terrible cranking noise, got to depress clutch and try again.

I was told it is normal but a friend of mine with MY04 STi doesn't seem to have such a problem. [rolleyes]

Don't bother engaging 3 or 5. Your wasting your time. Just depress the clutch and try over and over again. Very irritating.... especially in MSCP, taking up everybody's time ... [:/]

How bout bring your car down for meetup and let some bros assess if its really that bad a problem .... then you can write a letter to MI Management nod.gifthumbsup.gif

Spoke to another rex owner who has the same problem. He says not to force it because it will spoil the clutch. If other subaru owners want to meet up & compare & contrast, I really don't mind. I just find it ironic that Subaru can produce a car with such good handling & performance but cannot produce such a basic component as a gear that synchronizes. And if not all subaru's face this problem, isn't there any quality control then? Bring it up to MI? Am thinking of sending it to HQ in Japan. mad.gif

Well, I brought this matter to Autofix & he assessed it. Told me this is not normal for a new car. Only happens to old cars like 7 years of age. I was thinking, "just because it is common among subaru's, doesn't mean it is normal, does it?" unsure.gif

Hi Tea3,

I'm driving a 03 WRX. I experienced the exact same problem with the reverse gear - I was unable to engage reverse gear smoothly in one single try. I had to try a few times before the reverse gear could be engaged. Even if it was engaged, I could feel that the "slotting in" was not smooth at all. The success rate was like 50%.

I did bring the matter up to MotorImage whenever I brought the car for servicing. But each time I was told that I had to wait a while before I could engage the reverse gear.

Waiting for a few seconds did help to improve things a little. But the problem was not gone completely. The success rate was like 70%.

Eventually I had my gear 3 and 4 replaced because of some gearbox problems. My car was under warranty and they were replaced totally free of charge. After that, I could engage my reverse gear smoothly 95% of the time. The remaining 5% was not successful because I tried to engage reverse gear when the engine had not completely stopped.

Regards

CS

Thanks for sharing. My situation is similar to yours. Problem is people I speak to in MI (SE or mechanics) deny they can do anything about it. Will highlight what was doen to your WRX. Once again, thanks so much.thumbsup.gif

Well mine is a MY03 and I've heard other rexy drivers complaining in the forum about the reverse gear problem. Apparently they told me its "normal" due to "design flaw". Either way I'll be calling up my dealer and ask them about the problem.

It should be a synchro related problem...

3 and 4th gear ? How is it related to reverse gear ? Mine's giving the same problem but I haven't got any problems with any other gears. Sometimes I need to try about 3 or 5 times before I can engage reverse. bloody irritating ...

Hi BMW320I,

I'm not that mechanically inclined and I didn't ask the mechanics about the correlation between the 3rd and 4th forward gears and the reverse gear. The problem I had with the 3rd and 4th gears was that when the car was picking up speed in either 3rd or 4th gear and the speed was 120km/h or higher, I would hear a crunching sound coming from the gear box (followed by trembling at the gear stick) when I upshifted. Changing up at speed lower than 120km/h was alright though.

try this:

a. stop car completely first

b. engage 1st gear, then,

c. engage reverse, slowly (u must feel it going, if there's resistance, dun force, go back to 1st gear (and 2nd), then try reverse gear again).

see if it helps

hi.

mine is my03 manual ts.

almost everytime engage reverse gear got the "grrrrrr" sound.

brought it up at MI once and they told me to do this when to engage reverse gear.

when the car is in complete stop, engage 1st gear first and then engage reverse gear.

no more "grrrrr" sound.

They told me due to the design of the gear box.

due to something like no synroniser ring in reverse something like that.

The problem is that this problem happens with the car completely stopped, idling is steady and I still can't engage into reverse. On ocassional you need to try 3-5 times either that or pump the clutch and then try again. I haven't tried the 1st and into R gear method yet.. Will try it again next time. [rolleyes]

Thank you for the advice but I have been there & done that. At times, there is not crack sound but the gear just doesn't catch/sit in properly.

I also feel engaging 3rd & 5th gear doesn't feel smooth. Let a friend try & he felt the same problem. confused.gif
