Freshmaker Neutral Newbie May 29, 2005 Share May 29, 2005 hi guys, my ride is a 2003 honda civic es5. i have some questions... whats the difference between a CAI and a SRI, besides one being shorter than the other? what is a heatshield and what is the purpose of having one? does it improves anything? i have a k&n air filter, does it comes with a heatshield? or do i need to purchase one seperately. if i have a k&n air filter, can i still fit in a CAI/SRI? i mean, are there any space for it to fit? whats a crank pulley? if change crank pulley, issit consider mod to the engine? any performance gains??? thanks... ↡ Advertisement
Turbonetics 2nd Gear May 29, 2005 Share May 29, 2005 which type of K&N filter do u have???open-pod or drop-in??? if ur is drop-in filter,u dun reali need a heat shield.... CAI draws more cold air compare to SRI...better performance for CAI... for heatshield, its normally install for SRI to prevent the filter from sucking in hot air cuming out from the engine...and u need to purchase the heat shield seperately... as for the crank pulley,i THINK its consider as engine mod... cos the pulley is connected directly to the engine.... normally aftermarket pulley r lighter...ive not used it before... but from some forums, ppl say the acceleration is lighter thus pick-up will be faster... Apollo 1st Gear May 29, 2005 Share May 29, 2005 what is a heatshield and what is the purpose of having one? does it improves anything? Ans: pc of material to shield the Open Pod filter fr the general engine bay so as to reduce the air intake temp i have a k&n air filter, does it comes with a heatshield? or do i need to purchase one seperately. Ans: Most open pod filter does not come with heat shield, not even simota. only Viper does tat. if i have a k&n air filter, can i still fit in a CAI/SRI? i mean, are there any space for it to fit? Ans: should b. just a flexible pipe affixed to the bottom of car. there r more elaborate system which has a shut off damper in case it is raining too heavily n flooding, then u need to shut off the damper n return to high level intake. whats a crank pulley? if change crank pulley, issit consider mod to the engine? any performance gains??? lighten pully, eg AEM to reduce the initial torque so ur pickup is increased./ thanks... Freshmaker Neutral Newbie May 30, 2005 Author Share May 30, 2005 ok thank you guys... thanks for enlightening.. one more question, how to tell if my k&n is open pod or drop in? what the difference between these 2???
Turbonetics 2nd Gear May 30, 2005 Share May 30, 2005 drop-in r similar to the original filter....normally square or rectangle... open-pod is like a cone shape or semi-circle shape(mushroom)....
Kax2 Neutral Newbie May 30, 2005 Share May 30, 2005 You car manual or automatic ? Automatic cannot do CAI
Elfenstar 3rd Gear May 30, 2005 Share May 30, 2005 Why not?? Most cars come nowadays with some sort of CAI, just that the piping leading to the filter is too restrictive.
Freshmaker Neutral Newbie May 31, 2005 Author Share May 31, 2005 no worries, mine is manuel. btw, i guess mine is open pod, since it comes with a mushroom-like filter at the end. however, i change the mushroom from k&n to apexi, but the piping still k&n. not sure will lose power or gain power. 1 more question. my red line is 7000rpm. can i rev over it? if i rev over it then change gear, what will happen??? which rpm should i change gear if i really wanna push my car? Freshmaker Neutral Newbie May 31, 2005 Author Share May 31, 2005 thinking of installing cai but scared water go in.. sri better?
Vteckim Neutral Newbie May 31, 2005 Share May 31, 2005 Hey dude, bout the redline thingy, normally, if you overrev, i think a rev limiter will kick in which will prevent ure rev from increasing further. I've done that many many times....haha. In my first car, I fried the thermostat 2 weeks after I bought it....always hitting 8000+++ haha dunno for wat. Got carried away at pasir gudang i guess. Next we move to changing gear. Changing gear, or rather 'shifting' as i like to call it, is really an art. First, you have to know the 'powerband' of your car. Lets say, your car has 100bhp. You must know that u dun get 100bhp immediately, upon stepping on the accelerator. When you step on the pedal, ure car will rev up and as the revs get higher, the power available increases until it reaches a PEAK. Then the power will stay almost stagnant for a few more revs for example from 4000 to 6000.This is where the 'powerband' is and this is when u shud shift to the next gear. If u rev any higher, the power will start to drop again, so no point. So my suggestion is to find out the rpm range where ure car has the MOST power. This is when u shud change gear every single time. Always maintain ure revs within the powerband. If u drop the revs out of the powerband or increase the revs beyond the powerband, you will not be utilising the full power of ure car. Well I hope I gave u enuf info on gearchanging...haha peace dude
Freshmaker Neutral Newbie May 31, 2005 Author Share May 31, 2005 very well explained. thanks. but how to find out the powerband? i always thought if 7000 is redline, 6000++ or rather, before 7000, is the peak, i.e, most power.
Turbonetics 2nd Gear May 31, 2005 Share May 31, 2005 u can rev over ur redline but ur power will be lose cos the power cut cums in after 7,000rpm for ur car....unless u hav tune ur ecu then u might got further... which rpm to change gear depends on individual cars.... if u reali want to know the best rpm to change gear is perhaps u go for a Dyno Test... i guess ur car shd be 6,800-7000rpm to change.... Vteckim Neutral Newbie May 31, 2005 Share May 31, 2005 Hi again dude, hmmm. Like the other guy said, u wanna find out ure powerband, go for a dyno. If u dont wanna spen that kinda time or money, just go by feel. You should be able to feel when there is the most power, especially when u shift gears. Its difficult because as it was said in the previous post, different cars have different powerbands. A very narrow powerband will mean that u have to be exact with the gearchange. A wide powerband will give you some degree of freedom. So I'm also guessing that ure peak shud be around the 6000++ area. Go n experiment try changing at diff revs. U shud be able to feel. With the old DOHC VTEC its easier to feel. Now, ures shud be i-vtec so power delivery increases smoothly across the powerband therefore making it a bit more difficult in feeling for the power surge. Try it out. Then come back n tell me whether u got it....haha. Maybe u shud buy RSM then can really be accurate....HAHA
Freshmaker Neutral Newbie May 31, 2005 Author Share May 31, 2005 roger that. haha, the more u guys explained, the more questions i have. sorry bout this but im really new at all these technical know-how. air filter, cai, and sri are 3 different things rite? air filter is to clean the air, and cai/sri is to suck in cooler air to increase performance. so the heatshield in to be installed on which one? air filter or cai? Marcz Neutral Newbie May 31, 2005 Share May 31, 2005 air filter, cai and sai are 3 different things heat shield is to be placed at/over the cone filter of the cai or sri
Turbonetics 2nd Gear May 31, 2005 Share May 31, 2005 Yes,they r three differents things.... but u need an air filter no matter u r using CAI or SRI... a real CAI is a long pipe dat goes down to the front bumper to draw in cold air(Filter is at the bumper)... SRI is a short pipe where the filter is inside the engine bay...bcos engine bays r hot,the air dat the filters draws in will be hot air(poor performance).... this is when the heatshield is needed....its like a piece of rubber dat blocks the heat from entering the filter.....
