Hi guys,

I was at Pasir Ris SPC petrol station workshop last weekend to charge up my car aircon refrigerant. I was shocked to be quoted $31! The technican tell me that it is because of shortage of refrigerant world wide and hence the price had gone up.

I used to only paid $15~$18 for the service.

As I was in a rush and my aircon is not cold so I gotta give in and paid for the service.

How true is his claim?

definitely not $15.... tat must hv been years ago.

then again, when is the last time u serviced ur aircon? most new cars does not need topping up of gas. this is a sign of trouble on the horizon.

Yes I know. Probably the cooling coil or somewhere is leaking slowly.

Don't have time to get it rectify yet.. likely gonna take a day I guess.

I still manage to top up at a Kaki Bukit workshop for $18 early last month..

I thought I saw something like $15-18 in Changi Road. But there may be hidden charges...

I would say $20 is the market norm. Never heard of the world shortage. Wonder what is causing it ?

If there is shortage, then itis R12 refrigerant. Most up to currect cars use R134a. This one no shortage. Car must be damn old to be using such a refrigerant. R12 is more expensive than R134a.

It is leaking very slowly. Per charge can last about a month.

Hope can find time to visit the workshop sometime this two weeks..

Thanks

Yes I am pretty sure my lancer is using R134a.

That shop is a con shop men.. [mad]

Guys watchout for this workshop, not sure if it belongs to SPC or not.. but it is within the petrol station and the mechanics wear the SPC shirt.

It is along Pasir Ris Drive 4. U can't missed it. Its the only petrol station along that road.

Overcharging of ac gas will result in ineffective cooling after the car has warmed up. Just like overfilling of engine oil, more does not mean better as it will shorten compressor lifespan.

Yes I am aware of the damage caused by overfilling. Frankly most of the shops will underfill than overfill because they just don't have the right gas weighting scale!! Filling by just reading the manifold gauge is not accurate and especially for R134a filled system, the only way is by weighing.

I topped up my "OLD" a/c gas about 1 year ago for abt $24 at a shop along Pasir Panjang Rd. The ass-hole told me it's due to gharmen increased tax on "old' type gas as it's not eco-friendly.

I was in a hurry & needed the car to b cool the next day, so I didn't argue.

I think I saw A/c gas top-up in JB for RM15. Anyone tried??? The "old" gas sud b much cheaper there as many old cars still using it & no such tax over there.

Maybe next time I go there but I try Markool first to see his prices as a gauge of the market prices.

Thanks. I tot the guy sounded like a hustler, but I was in a hurry, so paid extra for the rush.

If $15 in SG, them it's OK to fill here. If done in MY, I save only a few $$$.

Nowadays got 2 types of gas. The old Freon gas & the new Freon free type.

Old cars prob use the old type & most new cars use new type. New gas is quite ex to top up.

Cannot interchange both types of gas without extensive modifications to the whole AC system though.
