  1. Yahoo news From The Independent : Army’s new £3.5bn tank fleet ‘can’t travel faster than 20mph safely’ The army was forced to pause trials of its new £3.47bn fleet of tanks over design issues, which reportedly left them unable to travel safely faster than 20 miles per hour. Problems with the new Ajax armoured fighting vehicles - which are supposed reach speeds of 40mph - also include not being able to fire cannons on the move, the Daily Telegraph reports. The paper cited a government report saying the speed restrictions had been caused by excessive vibrations in the tanks and that crews were limited to 90 minutes inside them at a time. The report, due to be published next month, says the tanks cannot reverse over obstacles more than 20 centimetres high, that personnel must wear noise-cancelling headphones when operating them and undergo ear tests afterwards, and that the Household Cavalry Regiment "cannot conduct effective collective training" in them. 2. Randomly came across this article on the possibility of a BMW Convertible SUV, did some googling, thought itll be interesting to share. . https://www.motor1.com/news/243237/bmw-finds-convertible-suvs-interesting/ How entertaining is the idea of this? Taking a muscular and rugged SUV/Crossover body and mashing it up with a soft-top of a convertible car? SUVs have been massive in recent years, gaining more and more traction. Moving forward will we be seeing more automakers chopping off the roofs of their SUVs?? How weird is it, really? Pretty damn weird to me when you have 3 rows of seats, and with 7 to 8 people inside. Here's taking a walk down memory lane. Toyota Rav4 Convertible "The strange ugly car that everyone wants: The Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet", as described on one automotive site. The Evoque. Arguable a lot less weird looking than the Murano. And then the upcoming, concepts and custom models. Upcoming Volkswagen T-Roc Cabrio, to begin production in 2020. Concept SUV Convertible Audi Q2 Cabrio illustration Lexus LX570.. this is a custom SUV Convertible in Dubai selling for USD350,000. JUST WEIRD... And then finally, someone had to do an illustration of the convertible version of the BMW X6... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnXMXBkuixA I wud think if someone buys an SUV it wud be for the boot space, the ruggedness of it, the ability to traverse all terrains, weather.... The Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet has the boot space that's even lesser than a VW Beetle. And if you buy a convertible it's because you want people to be able to stare at you better, because you don't have a motorcycle license but you want to feel the wind, and you want to experience how it feels to drive under the rain..... Hahaha........................ And if you get a Convertible SUV, you get best of both worlds, not? Convertible SUVs aren't anything new but they're still weird and awkward. Maybe a BMW convertible can make me change my mind. but I low ses. So no money to buy anyway......................... My thread is titled BMW but content only 10% BMW because I want to win tix to BMW WORLD la. Haha.

  4. In awe by this Soviet-era behemoth then probably due to both the book and film The Hunt For Red October but now if you invite me FOC from flight to lodging for a visit I would definitely say thanks but no thanks and give it a miss. Really impressed with these brave visitors but not sure if they brought with them a Geiger Counter each... Note the rusting interior and really how on earth a once formidable ballistic sub could end up in such a sorry state... In any case the days of these underwater giants are probably over and now the Russkies must be racking their brains how to "de-nuclearise" the reactors of these SSBNs. From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg..._submarine.html Posted on 10 Apr 2012 Step into the world's biggest nuclear submarine The Typhoon class submarine is the largest submarine in the world, measuring 170 metres long and 23 metres wide. STOMPer Zoolander, who has shared these photos with us, said: "Submarines have always fascinated me, not just by their sheer size, but by the fact that these massive vessels can stay underwater for months. "The Typhoon class submarine can carry 20 ballistic nuclear missiles. Only six of these vessels were built. Get on board one of them by clicking on the pictures in the gallery below.
  5. http://www.industrytap.com/thorium-fueled-automobile-engine-needs-refueling-once-a-century/ Thorium Concept Car - Image Courtesy www.greenpacks.com There are now over one billion cars traveling roads around the world directly and indirectly costing trillions of dollars in material resources, time and noxious emissions. Imagine all these cars running cleanly for 100 years on just 8 grams of fuel each. Laser Power Systems (LPS) from Connecticut, USA, is developing a new method of automotive propulsion with one of the most dense materials known in nature: thorium. Because thorium is so dense it has the potential to produce tremendous amounts of heat. The company has been experimenting with small bits of thorium, creating a laser that heats water, produces steam and powers a mini turbine. Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept (Image Courtesy www.cutedesign.com) Current models of the engine weigh 500 pounds, easily fitting into the engine area of a conventionally-designed vehicle. According to CEO Charles Stevens, just one gram of the substance yields more energy than 7,396 gallons (28,000 L) of gasoline and 8 grams would power the typical car for a century. The idea of using thorium is not new. In 2009, Loren Kulesus designed the Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept Car. LPS is developing the technology so it can be mass-produced. Wider Implications of ThoriumAccording to Robert Hargraves, “low or non-CO2 emitting energy sources must be cheaper than coal or will ultimately fail to displace fossil fuels.” The United States uses 20% of the world’s energy today and, according to Hargraves, if it cut its CO2 emissions to zero, 80% produced by other countries would still be a problem. With CO2 emissions climbing seemingly beyond all bounds, pessimism is rampant and bold ideas are needed. Thorium may also be the answer to the world’s nuclear energy conundrum and Wikipedia provides some of its advantages: Weapons-grade fissionable material (233U) is harder to retrieve safely and clandestinely from a thorium reactor; this means, for example, Iran could be asked to develop only a thorium based reactor, virtually eliminating the issue of nuclear weapon development. Thorium produces 10 to 10,000 times less long-lived radioactive waste; Thorium mining produces a single pure isotope, whereas the mixture of natural uranium isotopes must be enriched to function in most common reactor designs. The same cycle could also use the fissionable U-238 component of the natural uranium, and also contained in the depleted reactor fuel; Thorium cannot sustain a nuclear chain reaction without priming,[29] so fission stops by default in an accelerator driven reactor. Hargraves sees factories and other industrial concerns using thorium as well. Stay tuned as we track this idea and its development.

A hefty S$5 million supercar..... http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/l...-005241756.html from Yahoo : The Lamborghini Veneno, a $4 million supercar Of all the world's supercar makers, none stretch the idea of an ultimate sports machine quite so far as Lamborghini. For its 50th anniversary, the Italian automaker has created its most bizarre car yet: Meet the Veneno, a $4 million alien craft that will be assembled for only three buyers who've already put down their deposits

  9. Yahoo News : Hatching a living plan in Beijing A newly graduated architect in Beijing, China, has brought the meaning of living green to a whole new level. Dai Haifei, 24, has built himself a mobile solar-powered egg-shaped house in order to live rent-free, right on the street. The two-meter-high structure with two wheels underneath, small enough to fit on a sidewalk, is made from sack bags on the outside wall, bamboo splints on the inside and wood chippings and grass seeds in between.
