Lightbringer 6th Gear April 18, 2015 Share April 18, 2015 noob in this subject,so consult u guys. Yesterday,in the woodlands traffic jam,the car temp shot up after about 1hr of jam. just minutes before that, the idling rpm is erratic. i was feeling quite puzzled by this.then my aircon starts blowing normal hot air. at first,i thought it was just the super hot weather.but then i took a look at the temp gauge,it was few lines away from max! i quickly switch off the aircon and wound down the windows.when i did this,i noticed rpm gets back to normal and the temp SLOWLY got back down. as my inlaws and my kids are with me,as soon the temp goes back to the 1/4 level,i switch the aircon back on. all the while,my eyes are more fixed on the temp gauge rather than my driving.but thank God that the temp remained that way till i got home. and today when i drove, everything is as per normal. is there anything that should be replaced? The first thing you should be doing is to send in your car for a full check-up a mechanic. What are you hoping for people to tell you here? Just delaying the inevitable.... ↡ Advertisement

Aukang 6th Gear April 18, 2015 Share April 18, 2015 Difficult to comment or advise without knowing car make and model and year. Could be many issues....never do regular maintenance, coolant leak, radiator spoil, air filter or intake choked etc If you have a regular workshop, bring in for checkup like one brother advised. Brock 1st Gear April 18, 2015 Share April 18, 2015 My decommissioned ride experienced leaking coolant hoses at many joints. First was a pungent smell, like rotten eggs. Didn't know what it was. Ignored it. Next day, after parking car, heard weird sounds like rain drops but ignored it. Next few days, after I parked my car, saw steam coming up bonnet, including the above three. Panicked already, decided to open bonnet. Smell was very strong and steam was visible. All these while, engine temp showed no warning. Half way point. Decided to let car cool down and next day immediately drove to car workshop. Confirmed leaking coolant hoses at various joints. Cost me a few hundred to replace. And these was 3 months before scrap. Grrr!
Aukang 6th Gear April 18, 2015 Share April 18, 2015 Bro Brock, you were alert and experienced to let the car cool down. When I had my first car long long long time ago....a COE renewed 1 litre manual, I had a similar experience.... steam from engine compartment in the middle of the road. I drove slowly to the roadside and being totally inexperienced, turned the radiator cap opened...more steam came out...luckily I was quick to withdraw my hand. I then stupidly added water which I carried ....and again very luckily, the radiator and engine block didn't crack from the sudden cooling down...although more steam came out, including boiling water too... I drove slowly to a workshop and had them check the car. When I mentioned the pouring of the water, the mechanics shook their heads and said I was very lucky no cracks from the action. I said could be I have been using synthetic oil and regularly maintain the car every 10k. Since then I have stuck to synthetics and regular servicing.
