Redlining to clear carbon builtup?

I have come a across a mechanic trying to rev a diesel engine above 5,000rpm ( that was yr 1982 , diesel engine hardly rev above 5,000 due to exsiting fuel pump technology) - what happen the next second, there was a loud bang and on further inspection one of the con-rod hit the engine side wall so hard that you can literally see the the engine crankshaft.

my car peak horsepower is @ 6000rpm so shifting at 6300rpm should be in the peak "poweband" . nothing wrong in touching the redline once in a while. my 11 years old bike redline @ 15000rpm and almost every week i redline it at NSH without any engine problems for so many years. 240km/h @ 14500rpm 6th gear.........woooooo

 

Yes, one thing depends on your peak torque and bhp figures. But one thing to consider is the oil u put into your engine.

If u put in some 5w40 or 10w50. Fine can go ahead and ram 5k++. But if u put thin oils like 5w20 or 5w30. You have to consider will the oil be able to take such high stress shearing and heat. You engine is more important.

I think no need for redline. Constant high speed on NSH at 4k or 5k rpm for an hour or so good enough to clear the carbon.

 

Whenever I come back from a long drive, I feel my engine very smooth.

 

Anyway, if you want high rpm without breaking the law in Sg, just drive at 90 km/h with D2 on one of our expressways.

 

After 2 hours constant high speed driving on NSH, need to change engine oil immediately?

I don't see any need to change oil when not due.

 

If have to, then what about those who live in big countries and have to drive for miles from place to place?

 

Even in My, it is common from cars to go for hours on each journey.

McUnwell is darn carrot chopper. Once i go install some cheapskate Air/Fuel guage, for installation charges is $45. WTF........

Thin oil actually holds up better with higher rpm. It is in the low rpm conditions that the main crank will depend more on having a thick oil to keep metal contact at bay.

 

I ride bike too, we run them engines up to 15k+ rpm at >240kmh for sustained distances (like 40km sprint to Kulai for makan), oil as thin as a 30 weight. But one thing is that bikers do pay more attention to oils we use, top end ester stuff can be found in any good moto diam. Go in car service shop, mostly Mobil/Esso or Castrol only, considered the bottom rung in bike circles which only the uncles or the budget concious use.

yup... driving the car at close to redline do and sure sucks fuel... occassional juz give it a go to clear carbon... if you are up shifting.. you are protected by fuel cut to prevent your engine from getting damaged, if you are not particularly familar with your ride as in 100km/h in 5th (3000rpm) and your ride redline at 6500rpm, a sudden downshift to 3rd (??? rpm maybe more than 6500rpm)... it will blown your engine... so be careful...

my understanding is do not rev high rpm esp when just start engine early morning....do feel gear changing is smoother after driving high speed rpm3-4k..

u r mad.

i saw a video they only take 1 min to destory the engine of a rx7, by redlining it without moving.

 

 

can u explain how u do it?

 

some update - i just did a 7000rpm redline at neutral for 15 sec. no damage cranky sound, no weird smell, no leak of engine oil whatsoever. but the revving was loud and noisy. whole neighbourhood can hear it. i wouldnt want to do it again for risk that police will arrived at my doorstep.

 

now, the whole car is much more lively and faster acceleration.

thanks for the compliment. i wouldnt worry at all since i would have export/sold the vehicle by the time if problems set in. for now, so far so good, engine is even more responsive, though i care less about fuel consumption at all.

Another way is not to pamper the car, give it a good whack or two everyday. Do some spirited driving every now and then. Of cos, can go track also :p

taking about spoilt the engine, how actually u guys define engine spoilt. my ride a year old experience some king-kong song when i floor to 3000rpm. is like bearing runing around in a tin. I don have lose in power, increase in FC nor white smoke from exhaust.. I'm use to drive 4-5000rpm from 1st-3rd daily. any thing wrong? I think i'm clearing carbon everyday
