Any idea what is causing it? ↡ Advertisement
Octopus 3rd Gear January 31, 2007 Share January 31, 2007 is like bearing runing around in a tin Sound like engine pinging? What petrol grade you using?
Octopus 3rd Gear January 31, 2007 Share January 31, 2007 I was told to redline to 7000rpm for 1minute to clear carbon builtup in car every 3months or so. Is this car mechanic advise true or just BS? Expert advise please. I've read somewhere that the 'italian tune up' method works in the olden days, because petrol contain lead, and these lead cause deposit in the combustion chamber and valves. Nowadays the petrol are lead-free, so no such deposit which can cause poor performance. However, I do noticed the engine sounds and feel smoother after some hard driving, I'd guess its probably the engine oil had warmed up sufficiently and the moving component are well-lubricated. Pisces69 6th Gear February 2, 2007 Share February 2, 2007 (edited) Does the car need to be under load since we're talking about exhaust flow and not the speed??? So can actually put car in Park or Neutral and just hit the pedal??? Holding high rpm for 2 to 3 min or till oil temp cannot tahan??? Never high rev when the car is in neutral... There is minimal/no load to the engine, which is very very straining to the internals. Weird it may sound, but the power stroke of the engine does need a load to balance the force on the piston/conrod. ======================== U r very correct to say this. High revving in neutral is not good for the engine. The engine sud b loaded. Maybe can just do a quick acceleration touching the red-line then shift to the next gear. For autos, just find a straight, wide & lonely road & just floor the accelerator with the gear in "D". It wil automatically up-shift when u reach the red-line. One run every once in awhile sud b enough to clear any carbon. But a little carbon won't do much harm anyway. Oh & I forgot to add, it's best to clear carbon on a fully warmed up engine. The carbon blows off more easily. Edited February 2, 2007 by Pisces69
Pisces69 6th Gear February 2, 2007 Share February 2, 2007 An auto car wil not down-shift if the lower gear wil cause the engine to exceed the red-line. This is a safety feature to prevent over-revving the engine. I found it on both of my auto cars. I don't know if all autos have it though.
Pisces69 6th Gear February 2, 2007 Share February 2, 2007 found... mc-notso-well got this decarbonizing machine. giving 20% discount currently, but not sure wat it does or cannot do. ======================= If it's like any of the decarbonising machines I've seen in the past, don't waste your money. Many will add some chemicals into the fuel line & run the engine for a period of time. I think it's cheaper & easier to just buy those petrol additives which clean the cylinders & use. Cheap & same principle. This machine to decarbonise is just another gimmick to suck the dollars from your pocket into theirs.
Pisces69 6th Gear February 2, 2007 Share February 2, 2007 some of us tried this b4 http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/gforum.cgi...onizing;#670626 and some trazan boys used RedX and they smoke out the entire carpark ========================= Yup I also use RedX & find it the most economical of all. I use the type that uses 1 mark on the bottle for 50 lit & got about 10 marks & I only use it occasionally, not every time I top-up. Feels smoother on long runs & the stuff lubes the upper cylinders, valves & carb on long drives.
Pisces69 6th Gear February 2, 2007 Share February 2, 2007 Lead is the best octane booster & lubricant for the engine. Unfortunately it is also very bad for the brain & other human organs. That's why it has been removed from most petrols. If I can find it for my old (non-cat) car, I wud definately use it again. It' sthe best but cannot find it in MY even. Pisces69 6th Gear February 2, 2007 Share February 2, 2007 Have your ignition timing checked by an experienced ws. Too advanced timing can cause knocking, even with 98ron petrol.
azaouogh 2nd Gear November 16, 2015 Share November 16, 2015 Sorry to bring up this topic. My aveo engine light has been appearing and my workshop has changed the catalytic converter due to bad carbon build up. Light was gone and few days later, the light appeared again. However this time theres a very bad smell from the exhaust. I rev as advised from folks here and I notice there was white smoke and water coming out from exhaust. Is this normal? Anyone has any idea how to rectify the engine light matter? Any products I should use to clear carbon ?

No idea on temperature but seems normal, pointer shows below medial.everything feels normal except for the consistent engine light on, smelly stinky exhaust smell "rotten egg" and white smoke coming out if I rev few times.
