ABS, is this a necessity?

hmmm... well... not exactly saying brakes affect transmission. Me used to using engine brakes + pump action when face with emergency braking situation. Did that a few times and very effective too. So was prefering w/o ABS for new purchase. But from your reply, seems ABS very useful in carparks.... am now thinking to go for one with ABS instead...

You can do the traditional pumping action if you are fast and nimble for now. But in a split second sudden emergency, I wonder how many drivers can do that and to a certain extent, be as accurate as the ABS to gain the optimum braking.

i read tt ABS pumps 10 times a second. normal driver maybe 2-3times per second [sweatdrop]

I hv heard of some car owners that says they hv nvr activated their ABS in their lifetime of driving b4. Some says its only for drivers who feels insecure in wet weathers. Some activated theirs once b4 and says after that hv to go for chks.... is this true?

So I am anticipating whether to just go 4 a car without ABS.

Any Bro/Sis here have activated his/her ABS b4? Do you think this is necessary features for me who is self-proclaim safe driver who don't speed and don't tailgate?

The car w/o ABS is a manual car... [gossip]

==============================

If ABS is an option in your car & u can afford it, go for it. Same for air-bags.

These 2 items r safety features which can save lives & prevent accidents.

ABS have been known to malfunction & repairs can b expensive, but it will pay for itself if you only use them once.

If they r never used for the lifespan of your car, then u have been a good & safe driver.

Just like buying & carrying an umbrella. Troublesome to carry & makes u think u wasted your money to buy it until it rains heavily & u use it to get to an important appointment on time. Then it is worth every cent u paid. [thumbsup]

yrs manual or auto?

Some write up mentioned about ABS not required in Manual cars. I asked because mine current is manual and 15yrs old, no ABS or SRS.

I hv nvr experience the situation you mentioned before. Got once, riding along AYE, was raining, I jam brakes and there was no problem coming to standstill... I was at gear 3 at 40km/hr. Think i came to stand still in less than 8mtrs (thereabouts). So my perception was same as those write up....

so you are saying the ABS can help shorten distance of breaking also if I am going at 30km at carpark?

================================

If your brakes r in good condition, even on a dry road at 40kmh & u jam brakes, the wheels will lock.

ABS doesn't decrease braking distance. It just allows you to steer the car out of the hazard that's all. In fact in the dry, ABS increases the braking distance slightly, and in certain conditions like heavy snow, a car without ABS will just grind into the snow and stop while a car with ABS will continue to roll on and on into the car in front.

===========================

Actually ABS can shorten the braking distance on slippery roads as it prevents the wheels from locking & going into a skid. Once the wheels skid, u have very little or no grip & the car will just slide along.

ABS slows the wheel to almost a stop till the wheel just starts to lose grip & then releases the brake a little only to brake again to stop the car. This is done hundreds of times a second. Faster then what u can do.

This action stops the car faster then a full skid or manual pumping of the brakes.

At the same time cos the tyres don't lose grip on the road, u can steer the car while slamming on the brakes. Even race car drivers can't match ABS with their skills.

F1 cars don't have ABS cos braking is part of a drivers skill which is being tested during a race but they r considering allowing ABS on F1 cars in future.

for added safety measure, get one that comes with electronic brake force distribution, also known as EBD.

Another good safety feature to have. [thumbsup]

So is it really that necessary?

I heard that even if u jam brake hard enough on high speed, ABS will not kick in as well.

well.... we wouldn't want to make it so obvious to people that still think they can react better and faster than computer... [sly]

I rather u go for a car with ABS.

Not much people know how to do candence braking when it comes to avoiding accidents.

My frd just got into an accident last night with a Mondeo. His COE corolla does not come with ABS and the wheels got locked when he jammed brakes. End up his corolla surged forward and hit the Mondeo. Luckily, no injuries sustained to either party.

actually i just read abt threshold braking. supposedly even more effective than ABS. but of course, need properly trained driver etc etc and have to maintain presence of mind to do it during emergency situation [sweatdrop]

i wish i have ABS [shakehead][:/]

they shd at least make it an option, wouldn't mind topping up few hundred bux for it if i could

this mean that either the car don't have ABS or the ABS spoiled..
