Russ 1st Gear February 12, 2007 Share February 12, 2007 Good thing you didn't burn yourself. Braking is all about friction and dissipation of kinetic energy into heat energy. When you brake, a large proportion of the car's weight goes to the front (that is why you should never brake whilst taking a corner at speed - braking can lower the rear grip and then you lose traction behind) and the front brakes generally do most of the work. So, what you felt was normal - thank goodness you didn't just have a bout of hard braking or you would have burnt your fingers. In F1, the brake discs can turn RED HOT and reach temperatures of close to 1,000 degC. Keep your hands away from those discs until they cool down. Quantum 5th Gear February 12, 2007 Author Share February 12, 2007 even if I had been driving some time, why was the temperature of disc and drum brake so different?
Genie47 1st Gear February 12, 2007 Share February 12, 2007 That is because brakes convert the energy that is flinging your car forward to heat energy.
