Cause of loud howling sound when car in motion?

Now.. if u were in my shoes, what would be the next course action, given so many unknown variables?.......All troubleshooting options seem to cost a lot of $$.

That is what you get for trying to be cheap ! Sorry to say that but Korean tires are probably made that way. Way back, my buddy fitted a pair of Kum Ho tires and one of the tires burst whilst on the NS highway. Lucky for him, it was the rear tire that burst and he was not driving very fast.

There is no solution for a noisy tire. It is the design of the threads that is causing the problem. You were probably too used to the Yoko Dbs and when you switched over, you got a culture shock ! The only way out is to bite your lips and buy a new set of Yoko or Bridgestone GR80 !

its the cheapo new tyres that is the problem la......

if not, then its the balancing or alignment not done properly

one free way to find out: rotate the korean tyres to the rear and bring yr rear tyres to the front. test drive straight away....... you will see the problem where it lies.

My ride came with Hankook Centum K702 tyres and i think they aren't too noisy nor quiet.. If u hear same howling both also at low speed, i dun think it's the tyres..

First thought like everyone else was wheel bearings...but then again, assuming you know what it is, the other possiblities are, wheel flat spotting. If so then it will go away in a few days after some driving when it is rounded again. Road conditions on certain road does make such sounds too, is the road new to you. Is there something that stuck under your car.... window didn't wind up properly....

...Lastly,hope not, it could be a worst case scenario of crank shaft but then again it is a new car

hi bro..i am having the same problem. This howling sound is getting me very irritated. I change to AD07 tyres.

Are these tyres generally very noisy and casue the howling sound which I have been hearing? Or perhaps they are not that noisy just that my wheel bearings are gone. I am driving a 96' model honda civic. Old I know but what other syntoms might tell me that my wheel bearings are gone?

For wheel bearing, firstly, understand where the sound comes from, front or back. Jack the car up, and turn the wheels, you can hear the wearing sound, if the bearing is gone.

Loud howling sound?

Did u run over a wolf or something?? Joking...

U should goto a mechanic instead of posting it here. Unless MCF got mechanics standing-by to answer your questions. Even if there's one here, without checking out your car...nobody will know really.

Just want to put closure to the thread.

Went back to the shop at Toh Guan.

The staff did the "finger on shock absorber" test, and identified the problem as a bearing problem.

Went to workshop and indeed was traced to same bearing.

Been driving for 2 weeks now.. and confirmed that changing the bearing solved the problem.

So.. now.. I am driving on hankook tyres.. and the performance is quite good. And given the price, I would say.. is real value for $$.
