What does it mean when car stutters during idle ?

Assuming that you do your maintenance accordingly. Had this happened to my Classic (91 to 95 octane). It happened after years of using 98 to 95, then again 95 to 98....Somehow, it work out by itself. Many have told me about air flow and many others, somehow the ECU, I guess, is using previous data and hunting for the right mix for the fuel....have not experience it after 1 tank of fuel.

In fact all of my carb cars did that. Doesn't seem to cause any harm & I just leave it. Only a slight drop in RPM for a millisecond Then back to normal. If it got too bad, I just use a carb cleaner to spray inside the carb so cud b some dirt choking somewhere.

If yours is EFI, then maybe the throttle body is dirty & needs to b cleaned. U can DIY with some carb cleaner spray & see how.

If it gets very bad like every couple of seconds it happens, clean the throttle body.

Another reason cud b some intermittent leak in some vacuum hose or seal cause air to seep in. Another is a sensor is dirty.

If it is not serious, just drive lah. Send to the "wrong" mech & u wil end up with a fat bill & the problem might still come back after awhile.

No lah... Cannot be AC.... What kind of AC will cause engine to stutter/mis-fire ?

I'd rule that out...

====================

Sometimes when the AC comes on or off, the idle will drop a little, then go back to normal. If u don't know how to adjust this, just leave it. Not serious.

I fine tune mine myself till almost not noticeable.

if u are driving an octy...check your throttle cable..... [:p]

your petal will sink down, try unsink it and the stutter will go away [:p]

If you're gonna let CA diagnose the problem for you, i say forget it. They can't even fix a simple seat problem for me.. or rather can't be bothered to fix.

Hi,}

I think it might be this..... Air Flow sensor....

I am using a K&N drop in filter... Might be time to clean it... or maybe change back to the regular paper-sensor.

Have been warned before about using K&N drop in filter... that it will mess up the Air Flow Sensor....

Will do the switch-a-roo back and see how...

Koolaba is right although i doubt it would be the mounts. In addition to what he's listed, unlikely but it may be an intermittent problem with the O2 sensor.

It will not be an over-oiled air filter problem because VW uses a MAP/MAF system which is not affected by that.

Just a guess, If Octys are running with coil packs, then maybe you want to check them. I know for sure Superbs will face coilpack problems every 2 years

Its the electrical firing attachments to your sparkies... not too sure of the technical terms though..

Turbocharged

In this case, does stutter mean sudden drop in rpm? I find that happens to my car once in a while. I wonder if its throttle body dirty?

How much to clean throttle body uh?

I believe it is the solid state module that replaces the 'sotong' - distributor cables.

Like any electronic stuff, it can conk without warning.

Hi Guys.

Have recently noticed .........................

I always noticed my idles were not smooth (it will always blip and burp) when i did not turn on the the aircon. It was like that with no probelms at all driving in all ranges. But with the aircon on, it's no blips. You can check with the instaneous cosumption reading. I run on RON 95.

Also make sure, the car is not vibrating due to traffic. I was once almost fooled into thinking my engine was stuttering. I checked the RPM and it was fine, but could still feel the car shudder every min or so. Then i realised it was Keppel viaduct shaking the railway station carpark.
