Heater removed..any aftermath problem?

Recently my car had this weird noise when cold engine start.It sounds like some crushed ice or water from engine compartment.I could hear it clearly from inside of car.It lasted for few minutes then stop or when engine is warm.

 

I sent it to TC and the mechanic couldn't diagnose what is the cause, and said never encounter that before.Then they told me the noise is gone when they removed heater.They removed the hoses and used rubber stopper to block it.

 

Coolant been tampered coz I installed water temp & rpm gauges, so warranty considered void,moreover I didnt go back TC for servicing.So there's no charge except rubber stopper.

 

SG weather does not require heater but will removal of heater cause any problem in future? TC mechanic told me no problem.

 

They also drain out the air or something and told me to lookout tomorrow morning if coolant level drop then just top up, coz there is still air in the hoses.

What heater?

 

Are you referring to the thermostat? If it is, then no problem removing it lor!

If you remove the thermostat the thermal fans will be wired to run all the time instead of cooling the engine when it is needed. Although in tropical Singapore you will never run into the problem of overcooling an engine, you place unnecessary additional load on your electrical system to constantly power the fans.

It sounds like they removed the problem instead of solving it. They should have returned you the parts that they have removed. You should then go to a workshop that can diagnose and fix the problem for you.

 

Honestly I expect more from an AD's workshop than such flippant slipshod troubleshooting.

ehh..sorry I'm not tech-inclined in this..my understanding is they removed the hoses that connect to heater,and used rubber stopper to block it.

 

I think it's heater hose that connect to coolant?They said don't use heater.

they did returned me the 2 hoses.

 

I'm going monitor for next few days if the noise occur again.It seems TC mechanic cannot find the cause of problem.

Its fine. The only effect you'll prolly ever see is that when you move your AC controls to hot, no hot air comes out.

in SG, HOT air is the default when A/C is off

The only aftermath I can think of when heater is removed is that during rainy season balls will shrink to peanut size cos very cold. Your car will be alright though. Wear thicker underwear.

A potential problem is that the rubber stopper may crack overtime, cos of the great pressure and heat. Such mod was very popular among merc in the 80's...but most soon found out about this problem.

trust me... not as hot as when the AC controls are turned to hot our air is "warm" in comparison

i think what the mech did was remove the hoses that runs from the engine to the heater and joined the 2 sections at the engine while blocking up the ports to the heater (which serves no real purpose anyway). Shouldnt be a prob if done that way as there's no pressure on the stoppers whatsoever.

From understanding from the post...I believe there is a rubber stopped to block the coolant from going the route of the 'heater' which hose has been removed.

thanks all for the replies...I will continue monitor and check the rubber stopper if it wears out.

 

I just hope removal of the hoses do not cause any aftermath problems.I don't use heater anyway.

Toyota Altis doesn't come with heater anyway...so it should be fine
