Advise needed when installing engine oil cooler ??

Hi JY,

In my opinion, your car oil temp should not be that high ard 140 during tracking. Unless, U drive real hard!

Last Friday, I installed the oil cooler and my nonimal oil temp drops from 90 degree to 80 degree. but my last tracking, my oil temp reached 118degree. At the pit, my car has white smoke coming out from the engine. I think the rule of the thumb the oil temp should not exceed 120 degree.

"IMO it's like taking off your pants just to fart. laugh.gif

Engineers from the car manufacturer had already calculated and put into consideration of all the things ppl had mentioned. Unless u wanna challenge the Engineer's Phd lah.

If got snail then might as well change to a bigger size radiator, what for install such a small oil cooler?

I doubt that TS knows WTF he's doing. "

I track my car. NA. Car engineers didnt include an oil cooler in my car. When tracking, the engine oil temp is nearing 140 degrees without the oil cooler. With the oil cooler, the temp is reduced to roughly about 115 degrees. Normal street driving, my oil temp hovers around 90 degrees. All of which, is pretty acceptable. I think that by adding the oil cooler, im improving on what the engineers did. Dun think they expect everyone of their customers to track the car so didnt make it a standard item in the car.

I havnt heard of a bigger sized radiator being an option to reduce oil temp, over the option of an oil cooler.

Anyway, TS is asking for opinions. Would be good if we give them polite and constructive answers.

Don't do it. The stock system is more than adequate. If you install the cooler, you have an additional system to worry about. As posted above, there is more plumbing and more connections. You spring a leak somewhere, there goes the oil.

Jiayong and TS track, that is why the cooler is important but for the daily grind, unnecessary even though the benefits are good.

You're right about the connection bit. But the tubes are made of very durable material and there is always a more expensive option of going for steel hose. For my ATF, I've a bypass valve in case the aftermarket ATF gives me problem. I used one in my ex-car for 3+ years and it is as good as install and forget.

I am toying of this idea before previously.

I don't track my car and intend to keep my car for years and ages to come.

Dunno should go ahead with this.

Anyway, I do regular servicings of my ride.

This oil cooler looks a bit complicated to me.

I'm contemplating in installing one previously too. Best to find one that is suitable for your car, I think for ATF, they go by CC of your car and for oil cooler some go by bhp of your car.

Yups. U are right. I said i reach 140 without the oil cooler. thats why i return back to SG then immediately went to get one.

Today at track, max it reached in the 5 lap CCT was 116 degrees. wink.gif

Why today never see you there? sly.gif

Unless you oil temp is always above 90 degree C...there is not need for a oil cooler. You would be better off getting a ATF cooler (if yours is a automatic).

I'm in the grey mini. I think i've seen your car a couple of times there last year. Any idea bout the proton's bhp? All i know is that they throw themselves into corners. Damn scary.

If you saw the turbo category, i was the one who stalled at the start. Damn malu.

Your ride very impressive. the second placed guy was almost half a lap away.

(edited)

i think a lot of my credit today went to my mech. He set all the cambers and tire pressure for me. He managed to help me reduce my timing by about 2 secs and driving much more comfortably then i was doing when before i met him. unsure.gif

protons are mostly 1.5 or 1.6 carb. shd be about 100 - 120 bhp i think. I know a satria once was 1.8. Syed told me it was about 130 - 150 bhp. so i do the math from there. idea.gif

Yeah. their sliding is good mann...tts how they gain on pple too. I think they are more pro than how we view them as reckless.pirate.gif but there have been some mishaps too. smallcry.gif

Today once when the winner of the TC cat was behind me and pushing me... i slided into turn 1 too...woo hoo...my b*lls went up to my throat. But it was a faster entry and exit. dizzy.gif

I heard can get those race prepared proton for RM5,000. For that sort of bhp, the protons are really fast on track.

Next time i'll say hi when i see you at pg.. Must get some tips.. [:)]

Sure no problem! I am willing to share what i know. All the stuff i know started off from pointers from pple like Rosli(the supervisor) and some friends from TCC. And from there, practise and practise. Till now, still practising...

There's no need for NA cars to install those unit.

Invest in a good coolant can oredi.

if thats the case then why the Beemer //M series have one? in fact all beemers have them...and they dont put that there for no reason...esp when u are running a business and cost is invloved....it depends on the setup...esp with those high compression high revving NA engines...for stock engines its GOOD to have but not a MUST...
