What Octane (RON) does your JDM car require?

This should only be of interest to our bro's and sis's here that drive JDM cars.

I really wasn't concerned about the octane rating till recently as i got a grocery getter JDM car, and I thought it was odd that I would need to run 98ron fuel here in sg, so i checked (previously I drove the 180sx in Melb so it was automatically 98ron. Same thing with my Sera).

Anyway the manual should state if the car uses regular, super/premium, or super plus/super premium.

At the pumps in Japan, regular = 89RON, super/premium = 96RON and super plus/super premium = 100RON

I spoke to my former exporter in Japan, and he told me that all cars can run super/premium, but for the hi-po cars (that require super plus/super premium), their ignition timing would be retarded by the ECU (he knows this as these cars are his work). This pretty much means that all the JDM CTR's, GTR's etc would probably not be making their rated power on our 98RON fuel.

Does anyone know if the stated fuel in the manuals for JDM cars that regular and super/premium are the min RON rating, or is it the recommended RON rating.

I'm asking because if its the recommended RON rating, there wouldn't be an performance gains if we used a higher octane fuel as the ECU will not advance the timing any further, but on the other hand, if it was the min RON, then there will be a gain in a higher octane fuel is used, but the engine will not retard the timing if a lower octane fuel is used thus increasing the risk of early detonation on high loads (taking our local octane ratings into consideration).

Dude, I am no expert n I dont drive a JDM. I was told by someone I know who is more well versed in fuel that depending on the way yr car is tuned, running a lower than necessary octane may cause retardation by the ECU. In a TC or SC car, the ECU will pull timing. I previously also feel that SG roads no need so high octane, but it seems that it is not true. Yr car AD shld be able to advise on the octane level required. I run my car on V-power. Last time I pumped Shell Regular 97 in MY bcos they ran out of V power, damn the car was real shitty to drive next day. I actually donated the fuel to someone by draining it and refill with V power n car was back to normal.

Turbocharged

Since collected missus Vellfire, have been pumping 98, her decision.

For my XC, as and when alternate btn 95/98. Din feel any difference.......

Friends commented weird, shld just decide on either 95 or 98 and stick to it.

wanna pump up north, only pump petronas. the rest CMI lah.. [;)]

btw, my dad's thai camry, min ron 92 (i think). but have better mileage when pump RON 98. of course, one could say that maybe he drives more lightfooted when pumping expensive petrol, but it seems to work out for him.

i think best to go no lower than min ron, and to do a calculation on whether higher octane petrol is worth it. it may be..

Hi, i guess you should use what you are comfortable with. I'm using 98 and i found it ok. When i pump 97 in JB it feels rough. Any lower i guess it will detonate. I wish there is 100 ron in SG. V-Power, platinum, 98 ron... My car feels no diff just smooth.

I overheard a Lancer driver at the Esso pump station telling the Esso station cashier that by pumping Ron95 (5000) will spoilt the engine cos he wanted to pump Ron98 (8000) but the pump attendant has pump Ron95 (5000) instead.

That was new cos I never know that by pumping Ron95 will spoilt the engine. :D

Octane rating boils down to compression ratio. For performance cars, there's a difference in the performance. Otherwise, it's just more $ to the cartels.

For JDM cars, I've seen PI Wish, some with labels behind the fuel cover indicating the min Oct rating.

Dj, can explain what you mean by Octane boils down to compression ratio? I really do not understand.

CP of 11.0 can pump 92, 95, 97, 98, 100 depending on the mapping.

High CP cars in UK can run on 92 "smoothly".

This is just my input.

The thing about cars is that they advance or retard timing to a certain point only. That's why running too low an octane can cause early detonation, and also why running a higher octane than tuned for yields no difference in power.

I'm with boyboy. In Malaysia, stick to petronas

No lah nothing weird. I think most 98RON fuels in sg have additional additives over 92 and 95RON. When you say 98 is her decision, are you saying it the recommended octane rating?

For me its fine. Mine says regular so its fine as our 92RON is still higher than the 89RON in Japan. I'm more curious about cars that state super/premium as they require 96RON fuel. If its a minimum requirement, then the can only pump 98RON here (unless they get the static timing retarded), but if its a recommended rating, then they can run 92 or 95 without an risk of damage.

Sorry bro, SW20 is right. Its the tune.

Yes.. can run, but what kind of power do you get? Not everyone goes for engine-remapping and if you are talking about stock cars.. then the mapping is already pre-defined i.e. can only use certain type of octane fuel.

What bro SW20 means is that required octane rating is dependent on the tune/map and not compression ratio. He was talking about factory cars.

Neutral Newbie

Hey guys...I'm new here..

It's been an interesting topic..

My JDM spec ride states min 98 in the manual...never actually tried downgrading but engine sounds much smoother when octane is upgraded using booster.

So I always have a bot of OB handy esp when driving into MY where it's 97 max most times...

Most mechs and SE I talk to figured it's the tuning for JDM...

Betta be safe than sorry......

Cheers! [:)] [:)]

Am curious about the manual bro. Is it the Jap manual or did your PI do up an english version?

i thought just follow what the manual recommend, except that maybe the jdm car manual in japanese and therefore cannot read. anyway, i presume jdm cars can run on 92 as rule of thumb.
