Rtth84 1st Gear April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 Why do pple slam those who buy an entry level BMW with a 4 cylinder engine while Merc buyers dun get slammed for buying one with just a 4 cylinder? Just for discussion purposes, I can't afford any of the above :p ↡ Advertisement
Watwheels Supersonic April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 Cos ppl mindset is for a BMW 6pot engine is a proper BMW. Even for Merc, when ppl by those A/B Class ppl say it's not a proper Merc cos it's not RWD. Aiya ppl have a lot to say, just be happy with what you buy. Amgm125 2nd Gear April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 For BMW it's usually the smaller models that kena..like the 1 series and the 3 series compact a decade ago. If I'm not wrong, there's a 316i in the UK.. this reminds me of the days where PML were selling 1.6 litre E36 316i.

Just for discussion purposes, I can't afford any of the above :p Dunno leh.... what's wrong with an entry level Beemer or Merc anyway? Actually my preference is for a Beemer, and if I can afford it, my next upgrade hopefully would be a Beemer. Even if it's entry level I also like. Merc is nice but it's just not me. Snowblind Neutral Newbie April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 Their inline 6 smooth performance and power output seems to be very good. But from wat I'm have read about BMW, their handling is as highly regarded as well. Don't see anything wrong with a car equiped with a 4 cylinder when its handling is still good. Plus BMW with diesel engines are sold more than petrol in europe. The power and economy is impressive compared to the petrol. Wasted singapore isn't diesel friendly. Hubwee Turbocharged April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 Think the most important issue will be to be able to afford it and you yourself be happy about it . If keep comparing , then the M owners or the AMG owners will be telling you that for BMW its the M or nothing or for Merc owners its AMG or nothing . As long as you are happy , how others think will not be important at all ....

Pufferfish1 Clutched April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 it just a simple case of insecurity fearing what others would think of you............every car has a entry model...it just a way of marketing catching the human nature of comparing who's better
Blackyv Turbocharged April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 talk about these 2, my ex-boss once told me, those who buy bmw want performance and those who buy merc want face, and guess what, he drives a 5 series and wife drive a merc c-class... he has both, performance and face.... Hektor Neutral Newbie April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 i just bought a 4 cylinder bmw. wanted to buy the 6 cylinder one originally, but was out of stock so the SE asked me to test drive the 4 cylinder and see for myself if it's really that bad. IMHO, beside the slightly slower pickup, the 4 cylinder handles very well as well and is more than adequate for Singapore's road. at the end of it, i chose savings of 20k + less road tax over more power - better be more prudent in this economy. btw, my dad drives a 4 cylinder merc and i drove his car quite a few times and i think it's more comfortable but less of a driver's car compared to a bmw. whether it's 4 or 6 or more does not matter as long as you enjoy the ride. Wt_know Hypersonic April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 power is never enough. even though we don't drive 200kmph on average like F1 racing, the "desire" for speed is always lingering in the mind. 320 owner will say, give me 325 ... that's more than enough 325 owner will say, give me 335 ... that's more than enough when you have a 335 ... you will think of M3 i just bought a 4 cylinder bmw. wanted to buy the 6 cylinder one originally, but was out of stock so the SE asked me to test drive the 4 cylinder and see for myself if it's really that bad. Wt_know Hypersonic April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 (edited) that's a different whole ball game already. just like a soup up STI/Evo smoke a Lambo/Ferrari at traffic light. from a passer by point of view, who is the hero and who is the wannabe and most importantly, which car has the chio bu model sitting next to the driver sorry for off-topic .... let's get back to threadstarter discussion. Chickenbackside 1st Gear April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 Was just jesting lah. Honestly, I would buy an M3 if I had the money, even knowing full well that I will be smoked by almost every 335 on the road...
Morgan01 Neutral Newbie April 6, 2009 Share April 6, 2009 if you ain't into performance then 320i works fine. in fact the 320d will be a better engine with higher torque and better mpg...only if we are allow to own one. having previously owned both e90s (4 & 6cy) really not much you can stretch the engine on SG rds. having said that most BMW enthusiast will naturally prefer the inline6 over the 4.
