Is it very difficult to read a street directory?

I have a friend who just bought a car and HE has been constantly asking me how to get here or there. I told him to get a street directory but he says he prefer to ask for directions.

How come there are still people who don't know or don't want to use a street directory? Is it that difficult to read a map? I feel that driving tests should have a segment where drivers are asked to navigate from point A to point B within a set time.

get him to locate his nearest expressway...then study all the expressways in sg...once he know which expressway to use, he can easily exit out and then the street directory will help in locating the street/road.

Do you guys prefer GPS or Street directory?

I like Street directory more because I like to preplan on my own. GPS sometimes ask me to take very strange choice of roads and "next 200m turn left" can be easier said then done.

This is what I do. [laugh]

Familiarize with the expressways, major roads and key landmarks. Everything else can be found by using those as reference.

When I was a new driver, I had my fair share of getting lost, even with GPS. Sometimes the GPS cause more problem, because as a new driver, it's very hard to estimate prompts like - "turn left then turn left in 200 meters".... "in 500 meters, keep left then keep right"..... then before you know it, you missed the turn.

I realise nothing is a better teacher than experience. I have driven daily from anyway to everywhere for almost 1 year now. Sometimes the best way to navigate is just look out for road signs, remember road names, exit points, and to some extend landmarks. Of course when it's dark at night, especially rainy nights, landmarks are totally useless.

I think the TS is simply not a very understanding and helpful friend. When my friends ask me, I always try to help.
