Ithunk 1st Gear November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 For me: 1) Short stops when driver has to get off/ Change driver (with vehicle on a levelled ground, of course). - Engage N and pull handbrake 2) Engine stalls in the middle of the road, and for quick cranks to restart. - Handbrake, Engage N, Crank engine. i think handbrake no need....lol jus footbrake will do for no 2...but everyone has a diff style of driving ↡ Advertisement
RadX Moderator November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 Any technical explanation why? Putting gear to N seem harmless enough. Have you heard of Google? Also, do a search here as this has been discussed ad nauseum..

Why not leave it in D or better still put to P? 2) Engine stall is next to never happen for an auto car. Very suay. I think I'll still put to P if such happen. Don't really know when to use N. Ithunk 1st Gear November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 lol i think ppl drive too much manual...they drive auto get a culture shock....but for mi i am easily adaptable between the two...lol....i reckon it would take mi maybe 5 to 10 mins to adapt..... anyway for auto there are many settings...like P, R, N, D, 2 and 1 and more info here..... How to Drive a Car With an Automatic Transmission 1. Step 1 Observe the two pedals on the floor of the car. The brake is on the left, and the accelerator is on the right. These two pedals will be operated only by the right foot. 2. Step 2 Familiarize yourself with the gear shifter. The automatic gear shifter will have P, R, N, D, 2 and 1. P is for park, R is for reverse, N is for neutral, D is for drive, 2 is for second gear and 1 is for first gear. Use 2 and 1 for bad weather conditions, such as snow. First and second gear will only allow the car to reach a certain speed and rpm. 3. Step 3 Check that the car is in park (P). Make sure the brake is pressed, and start the engine. Automatic transmission cars will not start unless the gear shift is in park. 4. Step 4 Move the gear shift to drive (D) or reverse ® to start moving. 5. Step 5 Take your foot off the brake slowly. The car will start to move. This is different from manual transmissions and may be a surprise at first. Put your foot on the accelerator and gently press down to increase speed. 6. Step 6 Slow down by pressing lightly on the brake. Shifting out of drive or reverse is not necessary once stopped, but keep your foot on the brake at all times. Put the car in park once you are finished driving. Source http://www.ehow.com/how_2239466_drive-car-...ansmission.html

Ithunk 1st Gear November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 lol....ok i think it really depends on the driver when the person would like to use N....even the taxi driver put to N when stop....
Agentwilson 1st Gear November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 Hi Bros, I have frens who will switch to N when at a traffic junction. But 1 fren actually told me b4 that AT cars are not designed to switch to Neutral at every other junction. So yea, sounds logical to me. ( Imagine in sg, every other junction u change to neutral, seriously, u tink the car is designed for this? ) As to the purpose, i tink is for lazy ppl. Nua. Shift to neutral, then handbrake. Leg can relax~ For me, unless is at a junction whereby u know the traffic lights seepeh long one. then i'll put neutral, handbrake and nua. Other times, juz hold brake. Ericongy 3rd Gear November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 s--t... tink my gearbox going to die soon... i engage N even b4 i reach the traffic light junction... to let the car roll... n if light turn green b4 i reach junction, i engage gear to move on... if car stationary on upward slop, i use '2' to move on, overtake also use '2'... conering also use '2' (coz i feel more stable) my gf ask me y i buy auto car....? Huggable Clutched November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 For waiting at traffic light junctions. Naturally, shifting from D->N->D induce wear on the autobox. Stepping on the brakes induce wear on the brakes. There are 2 schools of thoughts. My take is, brake pads, brake fluid is cheaper to replace than the autobox. The condition of the ATF will tell you how "good" your auto gearbox is. I've tried downshifting from 4th gear to 3rd before reaching redlight junctions for a period of time. The ATF went black in less than 10k km. Nowadays I'd just leave the shift stick at 'D'.
inlinesix Hypersonic November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 TS, look like u really don't know how to drive AT. I used to drive manual. Nowadays, all my cars are auto. In auto, gear shift is controlled via throttle movement. I could downshift before entering corner without manual input. On the other hand, why do u need to shift to Neutral @ traffic light? By shifting into neutral, torque converter does not have any fluid going through it & it might increase temperature of torque converter. Heat is 1 of the killer of torque converter. L, D2 are meant for prolong hill climbing or descent. It is useless on our island.

Put to P, so leh chey.. go through N, R, then P.. Driver changed- have to shift P > R > N D.. me and my co-driver lazy to do all these lar 2) If for eg, your ride just clear the codes from CEL.. the vehicle has to relearn your pattern.. revs can run too low when moving off in a start-stop traffic.. then stall. Another example is that your throttle body get too dirty, stall also.. Many more examples lar.. Auto is not fail-safe.. my 2-bytes worth.. It is mainly to exit as fast as u enter a corner. Juz lift ur throttle slightly & slam it quickly should tell gearbox to downshift.
Sg2303 2nd Gear November 14, 2009 Share November 14, 2009 Errr.... actually AUTOMATIC transmission already means you don;t have to do much. So why bother to change to neutral or down gear with AT? Might as well drive manual transmission? I only touch my gear knob when i move off and when i park. That's it.

Source http://www.ehow.com/how_2239466_drive-car-...ansmission.html Point no 3. Does your auto car comes this way? or you copy blindly? not all auto car start with P only, CS3 can start with N. I use N when I need to park to pump petrol or short parking(roadside, hit and run errand), and some time I park over night I do leave it at N. Making the gear goes up and down will wear the box faster. Auto gear = auto gear, why make it manual? it like pull down the pant and fart. ↡ Advertisement
