Engine water dry up fast?

Did the mech confirm with a cooling system pressure test? any compression test done as well?

Got to weigh the pros and cons of each.

Replace gasket - Labour is probably $200. parts depends - parts for top overhaul including Gasket probably $100 plus. A proper workshop will ensure that the valves are cleaned and lightly lapped.

Replace with recon engine - has the above been done or needs to be done?

after getting those info, you will need to decide cause it's coming from your wallet. =)

Do not go by colour like what many third world countries peasant do when it time to take medicine.

===============

But that the fastest way to check if compatable or not.

Once u find the stuff, then u have to read the fine print.

For me, if the colour is not the same, I wud not buy. If same colour, my next step is the read carefully the instructions to b sure.

But I still prefer to buy from authorised stockist if their prices r acceptable.

That is what I did for my Optra as the colour is orange but can b mistaken for the red Toyota type.

If possible, I still prefer to buy original or OEM for my cars.

Have you asked a workshop to do a pressure test on the cooling system to find out if the pressure is able to hold and within specs?

The other thing to find out is if the thermostat is still there. In my current H. Accent, taking out the thermstat affects the system and cause water loss. Got to replace the radiator which leaked due to insufficient water level. Fixing back the thermostat fixed the whole issue and is working back to norm.

============

Never listen to those back-yard mechs who advise to remove the thermostat if u experience high water temp.

Maybe change a new thermostat as the present one might b sticking not opening properly causing the water to overheat, but removing it will cause the car to run too cool, especially on cold nights or during heavy rain & your engine might suffer power loss & jerking even. I know cos it happened to me long time ago.

got few quotes from 160-250 for replacing of gasket..engine wise as some say if chg gasket things wont be the same as in screws n etc..cause affected the engine..thats y engine also going up lorry?if get recon will it be costly?performance wise will better?but i feel not necessary unless theres a real need for it..n yes exactly have to plan n budget..no pt spending too much unnecessary wastage..

Didn't you already changed the radiator cap [rubber cap] on 1/12 ?

I dun think the spare water tank have to be changed due to "not closed tightly", becos usually there is a vent hole to allow excess coolant to overflow out. This tank is not supposed to be pressure tight.

that was the bottom rubber cap..now after assesment willl need to chg the top cap,the one on top of the radiator..cause my spare tank cover abit broke off thats y water comes out from there on the way back from overflow..

bought mine at 3.30 a btl..green coloured solution..pour in whole can n add on water..but now slight leak from bottom of car again..hai..dont know wat happened..

=================

Just send to your trusted mech to trace where the leak is coming from.

Maybe a water hose is leaking? Then just change the hose can already.

If your ride is a Japanese or Asian make and model - your chance of mistake is very very slim if you use Japanese original coolant. Japanese coolant is deisgned for use with soft water where as European coolant are more for slightly hard water.

=====================

My ride is a bit more complicated. U see its an Optra. [laugh]

American brand. Korean car. Australian engine. Assembled in Thailand. [dizzy]

So like that how?

Thats why I played it safe & bought the original coolant sold by GM. [grin]

Er.......Then why do the manufacturers colour their coolants differently. I always tot its for easy identification.

Like that u mean must read the fine print throughly on all different types of coolant sold b4 using?

Even me being a third world peasant knows better than to assume all white tablets r Panadol.

You can try Autobacs, ask the staff for assistance to select the right radiator cap.

It will be one the shelves, next to wiper blades + any other motoring products. So I seen, there are two sizes available only.

BTW, I only visit Shell petrol station, not sure if other brands petrol station have or not.

The best is go to stockist. Wat car are u driving???
