Adhi Neutral Newbie January 31, 2010 Share January 31, 2010 hi just want to know how often and how much water do you fill in the coolant reservoir? my car is still below 1000km, and the coolant at the reservoir will drop abt 1 cm every week, my ussage of the car is abt 1.5hr everyday, is that normal? i dont see any leakage and the coolant looks normal green. thx
Ben5266 Supercharged January 31, 2010 Share January 31, 2010 Coolant level should not drop for months. Bring your car back for checks. Or, are you mistaken the water reservoir for the wiper as coolant?
Kb27 Supersonic January 31, 2010 Share January 31, 2010 You may have a slow leak somewhere. I changed my radiator cap and it seemed to slow down the leak, but it still leaked slowly. Then I found the hose at the heater core is the real culprit. There was a slight leak and the firewall is a bit damp. I fixed another hose clamp and it seemed to solve that problem. Naturally, there's still some evaporation and the coolant might drop just a little. If you use a higher than spec radiator cap, you increase the coolant pressure and that force any leak to accelerate. Besides, the heater core, there's also two more hoses to the throttle body which potentially could leak.
Watwheels Supersonic January 31, 2010 Share January 31, 2010 Coolant level should not drop for months. Bring your car back for checks. Or, are you mistaken the water reservoir for the wiper as coolant? I dun think Adhi had mistaken the water reservoir for the wiper since he can identify the coolant as green. Question shld be when he does his checks? Moments after he had driven his car or in the morning before start up. If moments after he had driven his car, of course the coolant will take some time to return to the reservoir. It will not be an accurate check. Adhi Neutral Newbie January 31, 2010 Share January 31, 2010 hi kb27:how fast your is your coolant leak? empty the reservoir within days? and after you fix the leak, how fast is the evaporation of the coolant? like many be 1 month only drop 1/4 from the resevoir? ben5266: yes its the coolant reservoir. my previous car got leak from the radiator fins, so i can see it very clear because the coolant is sputting out. but my current car i cant find any traces of the coolant. watwheels: i check the next morning. and i realise it drop abt a line after i use the car. and abt 1 cm in a week. if theres no leak, is there any posibility that the ratio of the water is too much compare to the coolant? which makes the level in the reservoir to keep on droping when i use the car. thx. Kb27 Supersonic January 31, 2010 Share January 31, 2010 Before I fix the leak, the overflow tank would become empty in about 3 months. After I fixed the leak, it would drop maybe about 1/4 over the same period.
Chuma12 Neutral Newbie July 22, 2020 Share July 22, 2020 On 11/22/2009 at 3:58 AM, Yeobh said: When the engine is running hot the coolant will expanse and excess coolant/water vapour will drain via the radiator cap relief valve into the coolant collection bottle. The reverse will happen when your kill the engine, the cool down coolant system in the engine will creat negative pressure (vacuum) which in turns will draw the coolant back into the system. If there is no white smoke emission when your run yr engine, my conclusion is yr ride coolant volume is just too low. There is white smoke emimission when i run my engine and also the radiator s coolant dries very fast. What can be the problem. Thanks for your help

Probably quite expensive to fix.

What can be the problem. Thanks for your help There is a leak into the engine where the coolant mixes with the engine oil, hence there is emission of white smoke. It is best to get a good workshop to check the cylinder head gasket, cylinder heads, engine block for signs of damage or cracks. Likely a top overhaul will fix the problem, but if there are damage or cracks to other parts of the engine, those parts will need to be replaced as well. ↡ Advertisement
