Zangetsu77 Clutched April 10, 2010 Share April 10, 2010 Convertibles are not practical in Singapore. First time you get caught with the top down in a traffic jam next to SBS bus, sudden shower or receiving deadfall/blessings from birds flying overhead etc. is also the last time you will drive with top down. Must remember it takes 20 seconds to get the top up, and car has to be stationery or moving very slowly typically. Plus you can't track a convertible, it's not allowed. Felipe 3rd Gear April 10, 2010 Share April 10, 2010 assuming no one tracks, convertible these days are like coupes with hard tops and auto wind down of roof. but there's a premium to pay for that, so a coupe in that sense is still better value for money. if im not wrong for eg, the bmw 6 series topless is more ex than the non topless. Obviously must choose timing to bring the roof down lah. Late at night or early weekend morning is best. The wind in the hair feeling is unbeatable. You obviously havent owned a convertible before. Its a matter of preference. Esp for convertibles that are lower end like the renaults or copens, there are quite alot of rattling at times to contend with. Coupes are also more "practical" to a certain extend with regards to bootspace. Most convertibles have smaller boots as compared to their counterparts. Performance also suffers a little when driving a convertible as stiffness or weight (where they put up extra reinforcement to counter the roof being gone) will be compromised. Maldini03 1st Gear April 10, 2010 Share April 10, 2010 I vote for Open top. After a hard day work, when you drive thr the expressway, passing by the bejamin sheares bridge will ans you what life is actually about. Open top got 2 types, convertible and cabriolet. Convertible is hard top and normally mechanically open and close. Cabriolet is canvass top and normally you close yr self. Good point of cabriolet. 1) rare, always will have people looking at you. guys will look at you in defiant and girls look at you with sweetness. 2) cooling during the night. 3) People cant stop talking up yr car. as if it can transform. 4) stopping beside a bus will attract the whole bus attention. but it helps if there are pretty OL in the bus. lol 5) when adjourn to somewhere else not only female colleagues like to take yr ride, even guys also hint hint want to take yr ride Bad point. Poor insulation. too many opening. 1) Noisy interior 2) hot day swtich on aircon also no use. better to unwind the window. poor insulation. the interior cannot cool off easily. 3) unless you install ICE otherwise music wont be as smooth as normal car 4) please park yr car in open air, if realli flash flood kind of rain, sometime water may realli seep in. And some days rain just comes (on cool days), other days it's just too hot. However, i also notice many expats driving z4 and other cabrio with their top down even in peak hour traffic, something which i could never do. Guess they must really enjoy the tropical heat.... Convertible and cabriolet is actually the same lah. The terms are used interchangably. Leepee 1st Gear April 10, 2010 Share April 10, 2010 Convertible of course. You get the two in one package for the price of one! But night driving can be warm and sweaty in a convertible. The footwell area and bottom half is warm even with the top open! When open top, cannot drive fast, as the tissues and loose items may fly out due to the air turbulance at higher speed. The only advantage in sigapore driving a convertible is the admiration and stares from other road users, ego boost! There are more cons than pros for a convertible in singapore if one really want to analyse as such before buying one. If caymen comes in convertible, I will sure get one in the near future once it's released.

The_Bear Turbocharged April 10, 2010 Share April 10, 2010 yeah, in fact the convertible version of any car will cost more that the coupe version except the boxster and cayman thing. porsche managed to pull a fast on that. them germans are really smart. It's really becos the boxster came out as a single model with only a cabrio version so it remained that way. Porsche didnt want to make a Boxster coupe becos it wouldnt be able to set itself apart from the other model range so they designed a Cayman using the boxster engine and voila a new model out of nowhere totally unheard of and giving way for a new segment of Porsche owners. Like you say, them Germans are getting better in the game that Americans play.
