SINGAPORE: The Police have started trials of a new mobile automated vehicle screening system.

The system is used to capture vehicle registration plates using special digital cameras for identifying vehicles of interest.

These include vehicles reported stolen or involved in criminal activities.

The cameras are mounted on top of police vehicles and is able to read vehicle registration plates while the police vehicle is stationary during road blocks or on the move during patrols.

Police say the new system cuts down manual recording processes and improves productivity.

The new system was exhibited at the Police workplan seminar on Tuesday.

I think it means police can lim kopi and eat you tiao in car, once a car that is listed in the system were within the camera range, it will alert the police to faster finsih their kopi and go stop the car.

I think it is not so much of speeding, but maybe heavily mod or lorry with black smoke

it's an article from ChannelNewsAsia

I mean it's kinda weird they would associate speeding with criminals and car jackers. Since when normal police double as traffic police also?

Gahment should use the money to improve road conditions and reduce jams, example widening the road more, rather than implementing gadgets to catch drivers to earn more money.......

my 2 cents

Come on lah. We all have heard of a certain honda civic car jacker who stole car and change the number plate, what good will the number plate scanner do? As long as the number plate is same from another legit car of the same colour and model, difficult to catch.

Instead of scanning the number plates, wouldnt scanning our IU card reader be an more effective way?

say if the GPS ERP is in place, this capturing of number plates would be outdated/ phased out...

Actually the reporter who wrote the article is either drunk or high on drugs, police should get him first.

Car plate scanner can scan speed also? So hi-tech & so tak kong? The police might as well stay at home by their pc and just issue summon from there.
