Shull Turbocharged August 12, 2011 Share August 12, 2011 Change of mentality and mindset.. Most if not all parents in SGP view sports as a short lived career, which is technically correct.. A sportsman/women typically retires at what, 30-35yo? After that, there is no other route to go other than coaching.

I think in sg most parents would think going sports route seems like no "future", sg is more emphasis in academic rather than others talent. Getting more As is more secure and better. SingaporeSportster Neutral Newbie August 12, 2011 Share August 12, 2011 Why must sport be a career? Why cannot just encourage our kids to play for fun? As long as sport is viewed as a "career" then we will never get better.

Now I get my daughter as involved as I can - Taekwando is probably her favourite right now. There will be arguments later though when she starts sparring - her mummy dun want
SimonTan 2nd Gear August 12, 2011 Share August 12, 2011 All the past sports initiatives and the 2010 world cup vision all not effective? How about the sport schools? No good results meh? Every primary school got a sports day every year. Still cannot promote a group of good athletes? Very funny.....somewhere it failed. We are not hungry enough. The excelling part will come naturally when you have more players and more competition. That is the whole point of trying to get more people involved. Acanthus Neutral Newbie August 12, 2011 Share August 12, 2011 But that is the problem isnt it? Presumably i let my son play soccer for fun, and he is talented enough to be selected for the school team, division team and then the national team, then more training and more training. So when it comes to examinations and then PSLE and then O levels, how many parents will let their kid choose soccer over exams? I think the SSC should start from the top, convince the parents that if their child has the potential to excel in a sport, they should fully support the kid. Of cos this will have to involved MOE to make some adjustments to the academic aspect and maybe other Ministries that are involved. Not every parent has the moolah to send their kids to US of A for Uni like Jocelyn and some of the national swimmers.
Watwheels Supersonic August 12, 2011 Share August 12, 2011 Haven't you all notice? Sgp sports emphasis is about getting results and winning medals. It's never about fun. Those ppl up there managing the sports council have to look up the dictionary just to find the meaning of the word "fun". If they make sports fun which takes most of the competitive pressure off especially on kids, I'm sure a lot more ppl will take up sports. Already in their studies they experienced so much unnecessary competitive pressure, joining sports just add to that pressure. ↡ Advertisement
