Audi/V.W. engine oil comsumption.

You break in your new engine too gently. For those new AUDI/VW owners, I advice you all to drive up Mount Faber on a high gear then cruise down on a low gear. Best do it 3-4 times after your engine oil is heated up above 93 degrees celcius. The idea is to give the engine high load whch force the piston rings to seal with the cylinder walls and using engine brake(vacuum mode) to clean the metal shavings into the oil and into the oil filter. Hope this helps.

My friend finally sold the A6 & get a near 3 yrs old BMW 525i,guess what.???This car also 'eats' engine oil,but lesser,about 1L every 4500kms,why is German cars 'eats' engine oil.?????

All this boils down to the cylinder honing process finishing and the piston scrapper ring size and fitting clearance.Unless the oil is properly scrap off leaving a very thin minute for lubrication, the excess oil will be burnt off during the combustion process. This will result in loss of lub oil and resulting in poor combustion.

 

PS This is a simple honing stone powered by electric or air wrench - use by workshops when replacing piston and ring sets

Hi i'm encountering same problem. Almost every 2,000km the engine oil indicator blinks for my A6(2009')

and when i return to service centre the Service Advisor proudly state this is normal.

Been back almost 3 times for servicing since i took over this car 2mths ago.

Wouldn't Consider an Audi in the Future.

 

I do not understand. My 1.8 TFSI engine A3 need only to do regular service in 10k interval, & the car is driven much harder than the average car in Singapore. The Oil grade is in the manual, I can check later when I go to my car. But I could be using a different grade of oil & ECU set up from you guys in Sunny Singapore. I heard there is 'Hot weather' tune for some VW cars, not sure about Audi.

Something is very wrong if you are driving a great car and needs to do what you have mentioned.

Hey guys,

 

I was at the dealer just now, to bring my car (1.8TFSI engine A3) to fix some damages (due to their fault). I also told the dealer I need to do servicing (or so I thought), as the last servicing was done 10,000 km ago. But I got a big surprise when he told me I do not need to do servicing as the servicing interval is 30,000km (or 2 years, whichever comes first).

 

 

I was shock, but I ask him, if so, at what interval I need to change the engine oil? He told me no need, just change when you come for the servicing.

 

My colleague who was there also said its should be normal these days for new German cars to have only need for servicing every 30k.

 

So I am quite surprise some of you guys said Audi consume much engine oil. By the way, whats the recommended serving interval for you guys running similar engine.

Apparently there is a discussion now in BITOG on possible reasons of oil consumption issue. One possible suspect could be the gumming up of piston ring thus causing the increase of oil passing thru into the combustion chamber.

 

For those with high consumption issue, what sort of engine oil and oil change interval did you practices?

Its in the service manual. Beside, the dealer have more to lose by telling me need servicing every 30k (instead of say 10k)

Ask your friend try different engine oil like Redline or Pennzoil Ultra with reputed good cleaning ability, run short oil change interval of 5000km for 3 oil change and monitor if oil consumption has slowed or stop.

this might serve a point of reference. i just been to my usual mech, saw a Beemer 5 series, with excessive noise and movement from the engine. all these while the owner was going to perfomance motors for servicing and following their recommended serice history.

 

mech took out the engine oil sump and can seee that all the bolts except 1 was holding on to the engine. there is no oil in the sump which is not normal. so the top was taken off to investigate. all the engine oil is sticking in the engine in a gluey state. lots of parts are replace and bill came to almost 6k. so much for conti 30k servicing.

I recently went to premium auto, the verdict.....its normal.

The service adviser mentioned a maximum amt of EO consumption for a certain no. of KM traveled, can't really remember the figures off hand.

 

Just some info for the audi drivers, the digital display of oil level you see in the monitor (no dip stick for our car) is 1l of engine oil in reserve. Should have 5l in total including the oil sump. So once the 1l is all used up, there will be an indicator telling you to fill up the engine oil (audi uses castrol).

 

So far, I have traveled around 5k KM and the oil consumption is 700ml according to the info display. This is normal after checking with the SA.

Hope this is useful, anybody else would like to share your experience? It is indeed very surprising as I did not have such an issue with my other cars...

Maybe it has also to do with Sinagpore's Tropical weather, that the engine bay is much hotter.

 

No matter how hard & long I drive, the hood is always cold, but I don't think I driven over 8 deg since I got the car. But the water (or is it the oild) temp is quite high (biut consistant) at 90 degree though, on my A3.

My Audi need only to do regular service in 15k interval, everything normal. Something is wrong if you need to top up the engine oil.
