Blackyv Turbocharged July 15, 2012 Share July 15, 2012 How old are you? If I'm not wrong, many car rental co don't rent to new bird .(less than 1 year).... even if they do, the insurance premium cwould be very high and limited to certain car category... I seriuosly think you should not drive there, master your skill locally first.. there is a reason why you are under the "probation" category here.... ↡ Advertisement
Ammy Neutral Newbie July 15, 2012 Share July 15, 2012 How old are you? If I'm not wrong, many car rental co don't rent to new bird .(less than 1 year) Is this true??? Anyway, the reason why I wish to drive is because certain places I want to see in Europe are not easily accessible by rail. The travel guidebooks say it's easier to rent a car and drive to get there. I'm in my 30s btw, not exactly "young".
Gee 1st Gear July 15, 2012 Share July 15, 2012 Perhaps the question should be 'how driving experienced are you?' With unfamiliarity to foreign road marking & signs, drive on left etc, the difficulties you will be facing is doubled.

And do you mean "abroad" instead of "aboard"?

Well, I've been driving a lot since I got my licence, and haven't encountered any problems so far. I think my skill is quite ok. No problems with difficult maneuvers. Can even fit my car in tight spots. Ramps, curves, etc all ok. The only thing I need to be careful about is speeding. Another issue I have is being unfamiliar with roads, but the GPS solves this problem. Which reminds me - if we rent a car overseas, does the car come with a GPS, and is it the same as the ones used in cars here? Can anyone who's rented a car in Europe share their experience? Ammy Neutral Newbie July 16, 2012 Share July 16, 2012 that's what you think. Maybe you should get another driver friend to see how you drive, preferably a male driver. Someone else who drives is always in the car with me when I'm driving, to give me directions. So far, their comments are that "I'm ok". But I don't see how all this has to do with my initial question. I just need to know: 1) If I can rent a car in Europe if I have a 3A licence obtained in June 2012, and if so, 2) What I need to in order to in successfully rent it (e.g. must I obtain an int'l driving licence or whatever). I'm not going to be driving a lot anyway. I am going to make the bulk of my trip by rail, and only rent a car to get to the difficult to reach places of attraction, in small towns that aren't easily accessible by rail or bus. The amount of time, money & trouble saved by using a car compared to taking public transport in Europe is of great significance. It's not like Singapore, where you can easily get anywhere via bus or MRT.

JackRabbit 3rd Gear July 16, 2012 Share July 16, 2012 You know what, after reading some of the replies to my initial question, I think that's what I'll do. Nothing constructive is coming out of this thread. Why so much angst? Google is your friend. You ask a very broad question, not easily answered. You want to know if your auto driving license is valid in Europe. Europe is not 1 country - it's comprised of many countries. Each country has its own different traffic laws. So which countries do you intend to visit and drive in? For example, if you google "Singapore Driving License validity in Germany" this link shows up prominently: http://www.singapur.diplo.de/Vertretung/si...iving__car.html A general condition for the validity of a foreign driving licence in Germany is that the licence has been legally obtained and is still valid in the country of its origin. Licences with limited validity, e.g. learner's permits, are not accepted, and drivers must be at least 18 years of age to be allowed to drive in Germany. If you are not a holder of a licence from an EU member state, you should carry an international driving licence or an official German translation of your licence with you. Translations can be obtained from the ADAC (General German Automobile Club - the German equivalent for the AA in the U.K. or the AAA in the U.S.), from automobile clubs in your home country or from German embassies. Driving licences issued in the following countries do not require a German translation: Andorra, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Hungary, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, San Marino, Senegal, Singapore and Switzerland. Of course, since your license is AUTO - make sure you only rent an auto car. However, as the bros here have advise - with less than 1 year of driving experience, do not assume that you can drive easily in any country in the world as you do in Singapore. It's not so simple. You WILL face many unfamiliar conditions that you never would face in Singapore. For example, driving in fog, slippery roads esp in winter, left hand driving (very disconcerting, I can guarantee, for the inexperienced, and even experienced drivers), traffic signs in different languages, roundabouts (hundreds of roundabouts), people giving way, people not giving way, minumum speed limits (yep, minimum speed limits - you can drive slower than Xkm per hour), and the list goes on. Don't think that just because you drive reasonable well in Singapore, everywhere else will be chicken feed as well. But that said, it's an adventure, take it easy and give it a go. Drive defensively and follow the local traffic rules, and advisable to have someone familiar with local knowledge with you when you drive. Good luck! Nothing constructive is coming out of this thread. 1 month old Auto license. You should be able to get the International Driving Permit from AA. Most car rentals company might not want to rent you a car or they will charge excess premium for inexperienced drivers. Make sure you spell it out clearly prior to booking. Your friend's "you are ok" means zilch. We are all ok. I am one of the more constructive people around here.
