Yewheng Twincharged October 22, 2011 Share October 22, 2011 If your computer/laptop already equipped with high power/gain wireless adapter, than perhaps you could get better antenna. Since you still receive signal in your room but is weak, and by equip with high power/gain wireless adapter or upgrading antenna should solve the problem. http://www.tp-link.sg/products/?categoryid=217 ↡ Advertisement
Shicyj Neutral Newbie October 22, 2011 Share October 22, 2011 this gaget is cool, so its only applicable only when lappy runs on AC power, and not on battery?? Its just an extender to extend your wireless signal. nothing to do with lappy.
Yoongf 4th Gear October 23, 2011 Share October 23, 2011 Buy another router with Wireless N (dual fequency). Buffalo is good choice, follow by Linksys or TP-Link Thanks for the info.. But another question.. my 2wire is in my study, and I got another comp in another room which is about 5m away. When close both room doors, the signal is hopeless. In this scenario, am I better off getting a new WLAN access point , to be placed in the hallway, ... or a simple change of the ADSL/WLAN integrated modem wil do? Jman888 Moderator October 23, 2011 Share October 23, 2011 (edited) this gaget is cool, so its only applicable only when lappy runs on AC power, and not on battery?? You need a pair, one to the router an the other wifi one in your room, you will still detect two wifi network, but it will auto select the stronger one if you walk from one room to another. But it mean you need two spare power socket which many house usually quite do not have I think if plug into an extension, the network speed is compromised. I would just change the router with stronger antenna. Edited October 23, 2011 by Jman888
Watwheels Supersonic October 23, 2011 Share October 23, 2011 Have you measured throughput point to point? How are they like? One thing which i find Homeplugs let down is the sensitivity to noise. I don't know about you but our PUB certification for house circuitry did not put alot of emphasis on electrical noise. So if your house wiring is bad then SNR will be In addition, Homeplugs are susceptible to further attenuation generated by appliances utilising inverter technology e.g. Fridges and A/C units. Best is still CAT6 cabling on simple star topology. Worst case scenario it will give you 600Mbps throughput i.e.75MB/s. Whoa, no leh. I didn't find out how fast the data is streaming. Cos I was like thinking I'm only using it to watch YouTube and the free online tv from Singtel, there isn't any lag. My home wiring layout is all hidden so I run really know. But I dun think security is an issue cos home plug now have encryption. The wireless USB dongle is too slow. It's a world of difference when I use the home plug. Nowadays home plug support HD online streaming I dunno why ppl still have the old home plug thinking.

One simple way to measure is just plug in a computer via one homeplug maybe a notebook will be convenient. Keep another computer connected via cat5 or cat6 and make these 2 fellas join a Homegroup (assuming you got Win7) Just click and drag files from one computer to another (you can toggle advanced view on the file transfer dialog window, this gives you the throughput more or less) If you're not Win 7 still you can set up a Workgroup on Win XP but this time you just download a small utility called Lan Speed Test Basically you install this app on both computers, but you only initiate the test from one computer. The app creates a dummy file of varying sizes and it tracks the read and write throughput bandwidth and deletes the file after it is done. I feel that it is important sometimes to know the actual performance/value of what was promised. Not to bang table at the manufacturer but it is good to know sometimes. Like my cousin, he kept complaining about jerky playback on his HDTV from a movie stored from his NAS. Suddenly he was thinking about RMA-ing his TV, the NAS and whats not. A simple test like this shows clearly the problem is that the network simply cannot make it literally.

You may want to know that wireless signals across the range of the invisible light spectrum are being spammed around you be it you switch on your router or not. Ben5266 Supercharged October 23, 2011 Share October 23, 2011 initially have this stupid thought... ON the router A if i am using desk top in my children room, then if i need to use lappy, on router B in my room and OFF router A at children room...sound rather silly , but should work?? In the end, think better get a baffalo Hahaha... This is not stupid. I think this will work. Make sure you switch off the 1st one before you turn on the 2nd one. Or else, Singnet might think someone is stealing your account.
Ben5266 Supercharged October 23, 2011 Share October 23, 2011 Anyone know about Smart LED tvs. Smart tv in one room which has Star hub socket. Computer in another room also got Starhub socket and Hub station in this room. Wired connections. How to set up so that the Smart TV can view youtube? Does it need a router and a dongle and where best to set these up? Or is there another way? Assuming your hub station has only 1 LAN port. Move your hub station to the room with smarttv. Connect hub station LAN port to a new wireless router on one of its 4 LAN port. PC use wireless. I am using SingNet fibre. The modem/router has 4 LAN ports. So I connect 1 LAN to miomio box, 2nd LAN to TV LAN port. Build in wireless turn on for notebook, ipad and iphone.
Watwheels Supersonic October 23, 2011 Share October 23, 2011 Thanks for yr suggestion but I really dun have to go to that extent. As long as there's no lag & interruptions in the streaming it's good enough for me.
