OK, now that I have a bit more time for a serious reply: agree that branding comes with a reputation blah blah, BUT when a manufacturer breaks the mold and comes up with a product that defies expectations to the point where auto journalists pretty much the world over are *raving* about it, then it IS just prejudice to say "it's just a Nissan".

100%

few cars (with perhaps the exception being the E type Jag) have come close to its performance V cost ratio

Car snobs dont like it because it embarrasses the hell out of their "super cars" for a fraction of the price [:p]:D

Turbocharged

no

although it is a better platform to start from than a 911..........

Is it true that only 911 consider supercar for posh?

I prefer a raw driving feel, but I'll take superlative power/torque:weight.

When I tested a Lotus Elise 1.6SC (supercharged) manual just before a BMW M3 coupe, I was underwhelmed by the latter. The Lotus was down on power, but it more than made up for it with a phenomenally raw driver's experience.

But the GTR has enough kick in the crotch power to satisfy even me, I think.

yes tracking the R35 is not be as much "fun" as the lotus

on average sized tracks there isnt much differential time wise, the R35 crawling around the corners that the lotus flies around only to come tearing past the lotus just before next corner entry.

On bigger circuits (over3km) the r35 usually leaves the lotus standing

I race with guys supercharged/turbo charged fire breathing carbon fiber lotus's that are 1 sec slower than an F3 car around Tsukuba.........

I agree stock is gutless, but easy to boost up to 300bhp. in a 900kg car thats a better power to weight than most.

3.5 secs is doable in a SC lotus. so have max handling plus max acceleration - fun!

my point is only that porsche have decided the 'conceptually flawed' 911 platform to be their "supercar" when in fact the cayman if it was to be allowed to be their sportcar would make a better one (much better balanced car)

the 911 has been made capable despite its conceptual flaws (big heavy large rear mounted engine)

many hoped when the cayman came out they would make it their high end sports model....shame

have you considered a noble? i am pretty that the ariel atom will be raw enough for you but you will hate to make it an everyday car. [laugh]

It's like you read my mind. [laugh] Yes, I've considered a Noble, but am very worried about the reliability and being able to fix it if something goes wrong.

And I had the same thoughts about the Atom, with the added problem of daily liveability.

by all accounts the Caymen should be their 'flagship' in terms of its potential capabilities but for commercial/heritage reasons, 911 stays [:(] .......... thats what i was told by quite few hardcore porscheists... :o

curious: the routine maintenace cost / wear n tear replacement of a R35 much higher than a equivalent porsche?

Lets put it this way.

You could buy around 3 R35s for the price of a comparable (performance wise) porsche (GT2/3)

there are many many times more aftermarket suppliers for porsche so for racing the Porsche may end up being the cheaper car to race as regards repairs and service items. But for road car using stock parts - forget it :D
