WAZE - GPS apps for drivers

Needed to go Pasir Ris whitesand mall from CBD. Tried waze and ended up lost in Geylang. Lots of brightly lit durian stalls. Will uninstall tomorrow. Google Maps is still the best.

i'm a staunch supporter of waze :)

 

yeah, sometimes it's kinda irritating when waze brings you to a inaccurate destination (albeit nearby, i.e. within 50-100m) but due to the social nature of it, it gets updated with traffic conditions in real time. it has saved me from wasting minutes/hours of waiting in stand-still traffic.

 

i still have my garmin, but i find it a hassle to update my map (usually from malsingmaps) every now and then. i used to find "free" maps when i went overseas but nowadays i just use waze.

 

 

ps: i used to do amazon flex too. waze is an indispensable tool 'cos i just can't be late :)

The latest garmin can do a map update through the phone Internet already. Even slightly older version can link to pc and do a direct update. Last time when it first came out was troublesome, need to install this and that. I'm still on garmin.

mine was bought some 10 yrs ago. tried to connect to pc via usb cable and installed the relevant program but no luck. in the end i gave up. 

 

when i got extra budget i'd consider getting latest garmin

I used Waze in SG and Malaysia for live traffic and TP updates. For other countries, I use Google map. It is an excellent travel planning tool (ie. place of interest, accommodation, airport, etc) and you can create different folders for each trip.

I wrote earlier I got Carplay wireless, but Apple map sucks.

 

As for Android, have you got AA Wireless to work ?

I only have 5050bt, the first wired AA for pioneer which works fine.

 

Didn't and couldn't try wireless but was under the impression it'll drain battery.

 

Have you tried wired AA?

Waze is not perfect, but it tries to be a little too smart at times.

Whereas Gmaps will generally leave you near, and let you find the rest of the way.

 

Example: I get a pickup at 90 Edgedale Plains. It's a new condo The Terrace.

 

Waze would route me to 663A Punggol Dr car park. It's the closest to that condo block. But if you look at a street map, it's wrong bcuz you can't crossover from hdb to a condo block, even if it's next to each other. That's what I meant by it tries to be too smart. Although it actually has a route into the condo, but not this blk which is much closer to the hdb cluster.

 

Now, if you use GMap, it would simply leave you at Edgedale Plains and let you find the rest of the way yourself. In this case, it's not an issue bcuz you could see the condo and the entrance. But in other cases, it leaves you at the wrong side of the road and it can be quite frustrating.

Esp when a building is at a corner fronted by 3 or 4 different roads with one-way street.

 

The last time Gmap route me to JTC The Summit, it left me at Jurong Town Hall Rd, which is frustrating bcuz that is a one-way road and the drop off point was actually at Jurong East St 12. I lost a pickup when the rider saw I was hopelessly stuck at the wrong side of the building. But now it has improved and will direct you to Jurong East St 12.

Whereas Waze will actually lead you into the drop off point itself.

 

I just had too many misses with google maps, that's why I stick with Waze, which is more reliable, but not foolproof.

Tell you something to improve pick up and drop off for waze. Once you encounter waze bring you to the next building or road nearby but not the correct entrance. Feedback to grab and ask them to shift the pin closer to the building pick up entrance. Grab team will update it. The Terrace was a new condo. As mentioned, the pickup block was much closer to the hdb blocks than the correct entrance at Edgedale Plains, and thus Waze routing.

Normally at this point, I'll expand the pickup point on Waze and then redirect it manually after examining it and the address.

 

But in some cases, I was "too clever", ignore Waze and got myself in trouble instead.

Springleaf Tower has a Anson Rd address, but the correct drop off was at Prince Edward Rd.

So I ignore Waze and went to the wrong Anson Rd side and the rider was not happy.

I'm using Papago on my phone for SG/MY direction. So far so good. No need data. Postal code input result more accurate compared to Here map.

Did a trip in Europe and we used both waze and google maps. Sometimes it more difficult to set the location with waze from google searches. Thus googles maps was handy. But waze did offer a better user interface and routing algorithm.

 

I rather pay for data than to get maps from elsewhere. You get real time road closures. Major accidents can close the road for a long long long time in big countries and unlike small Singapore, there can be no exits for 20-30km. Then you are screwed big time. We managed to avoid one long massive jam.

I see. After reading that and a bit of googling, I realised Android auto wireless only for Pixel and future Android p. But it should support wired AA? Kinda dumb if it doesn't.

 

Anyway I only use AA for phone calls, music and reading out messages and replying using voice for sms n Whatsapp. Sometimes I talk to google when I'm bored.

Nowadays standalone sat nav might be useful in Singapore.

 

Once you are out of Singapore, it is useless without traffic monitoring.

I'm already using Android P (non-Google) but still no joy.

 

Pioneer told me Google detects in Singapore and thus won't connect.  But I won't take 100% what the local Pioneer guy says.

 

One last try is to use Google phone (perhaps the latest Pixels) to try if indeed it's Google which locks location.  I'm not giving up because there should be an error message rather than just not connecting.  I'm hoping someone using the Pixels/Nexus 5X/6P can post back.

 

By which time, hopefully iOS12 allows third-party nav app and Google would probably feel the pressure to release AA Wireless worldwide.

 

We're getting there.

In singapore also. There was a few times when expressway was at standstill due to major traffic accident. Waze direct me to avoid that expressway. Although the journey took longer time then usual to reach, but still better then stuck in standstill traffic which is worst.
