What is the propulsion system for these remote control (R/C) jumbo jets?

Normally these model planes are propelled by propellers but from the photos they does not seem to be so leh.

Only our resident car cam and R/C specialist Adrian can answer I guess [laugh]

From STOMP:

Not your usual model planes -- These guys build Concordes and jumbo jets

These people have an extraordinary hobby. They build scale versions of Concordes and jumbo jets that are capable of flight.

Said STOMPer Iwanttofly:

"I have seen people at Pasir Ris building scale models of planes which are capable of flight.

"But the guys in these pictures build scale models of Concordes and jumbo jets, which I have not seen before.

"It's quite cool to see these models take flight."

can put behind a skateboard?

Can. These r/c jet turbines are actual scaled down versions of the real turbines. They work exactly the same as a real one would.

Ppl already install it behind their home made kart :

And Jet Man used four R/C jet turbine engines for his flights :

I know this is the scale down model but fwah if the real thing can muster such a fantastic rate of climb, RSAF sure make a few orders for the real thing. lol

But how do they see the plane in flight if the plane fly too far away?

Cannot fly too far away, depends on pilot's eye sight.

But now there is FPV, aka First Person View. It can be installed in the c0ckpit and you fly it like the real thing. A camera is installed which will replicate ur head movement and allow u to view thru video goggles or LCD tv while flying. Which this, u can fly out of line of sight. Normally ppl fly abt 3-5km away while enjoying the view.

However, it is currently illegal in SG to fly using FPV. Cause the video transmission frequency is very high output and it interferes with IDA tele equipments. Also there is an issue with CAAS and Mindef for security reasons.

Search youtube, u will see how ppl fly FPV thru mountains, grand canyon, open fields, etc.....

Technology has been advancing at an amazing rate. Just dont open ur mouth wide in shock when ppl tell u abt such things do exist at an affordable price too. [laugh]

How long can the jet turbines last in the air? Not v long, I guess

Depends on ur fuel tank. Typical flight is around 5-10mins cause pilot eye fatigue. U will need to keep ur eyes on the plane constantly cause they fly fast and u will need to react fast too.

U want long flight, just fit a bigger fuel tank. US UAV Global Hawk uses Jet Turbines too, they can last for 36hours in the sky. But u got to calculate ur power to weight ratio, ur wing span payload, etc....
