Dear MCFers

Need advice on notice period... is it normal for Sg companies to cut short the notice period once you tender resignation?

eg a person's notice period is 3 months. The moment he tendered, the company let him go within a month on grounds that he could be joining competitor, his heart is not in it, etc etc even though the guy is willing to go through the 3 months (during which time he will also clear outstanding leave).

if u in sensitive areas, and perhaps backend, they can do that. They duwan u to sabo, etc. In fact, once u tender, evening, u no access to e-mail. Best to check and archive whatever before u hand in letter. They may ask you dun come in next day, hand in laptop, and byeeeeeeee

my line no problem, i cannot take my work home....duwan to also if i could [laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh]

yes. the modus operandi now is to get rid, unless u in areas like teaching, etc. But sensitivity of the IT systems and all can lead to such decisions

The only companies that wants their employees to serve/complete the full term are located at those 'Red' numbering houses in Geylang Lorongs 16 ~ 22. If employees leave early, will affect businesses ..... [laugh][laugh]

2 persons from our company recently resigned. They are at the same level and are required to give 2 months' of notice according to the original contract.

The first one served the full 2 months and was not allowed to clear leave throughout the period. The second person was allowed to leave earlier as he was joining a competitor.

Will u guys let the current employer knows that you are gonna join a competitor? Or can give it as an excuse to get early release [:p]

what i though, if the offer from other company is really better, i will just pay off the balance. no point holding back a better offer because of 3 month salary.

Companies who exercise the above have really incompetent HR. What is the point of tying up notice to 3 months when actually you end up releasing him and pay him? INCOMPETENCE!!!

Seen too many incompetent HR to know how stupid they are. [laugh]

Depending on the job scope and position, I think the 3-month notice is to deter you from resigning and make you pay back thick-thick should you want to leave early.

Then again it could also be to facilitate the handling/taking over process.

I do find it strange that your colleague was allowed to leave early knowing that he is joining a competitor. If joining a client, that I undetstand.

I remembered some of my sub-contractor friends were made to wait in the factory for 1-month without any benefits for being retrenched.
