***Warning Cyclists - No cycling on pavements

I cycled to work for close to 4 years. Why do people make such a big fuss about bicycles on pavements? How many pedestrians have bicycles run over and killed? And how many cyclists have been run over and killed by cars, trucks, busses, lorries, and so on?

I don't think drivers should learn to share the road, I mean of course they should, but the question is whether pavements should be off-limits to cyclists. It's more important, I think, for pedestrians and cyclists to learn to share the pavement. Also cyclists should stop being dicks and respect pedestrians instead of trying to run them off the pavement, which happens to me and I'm angry at those cyclists for ruining our shared rep.

We all need to stop thinking of each other in these terms:

It is sad that it has to come down to enforcement before ppl start waking up.

There are far too many cyclist who think they have every right to cycle on the pavement that they completely disregard the safety of the pedestrian. The problem is further compounded by the increase in population.

If every cyclist exercise some due care and consideration, no one will complain and everybody gets to share the use of pavement. I wouldn't mind giving way to a cyclist who politely ask to be given the way and appreciate with a thank you after that. But I certainly mind being belled to death by a certain grp of cyclist.

Totally agreed. Everytime I cycle, I do it on pavements and I am so pissed off with those uncle cyclists who curses at anybody and everybody in their way. Even basic courtesy like keeping left is like a foreign concept, let alone giving way to pedestrians on the pavement (and cars when crossing the road!). These are the cyclists that should be barred from the pavements.

I only cycle to pick up my kid to and fro kindergarten. When he is happy, he will sometimes sway from side to side no matter what I say, and I will wobble big time... on the road, that can be a death sentence.

If I cannot cycle on the pavement, I will be driving.

When you already have a car, bus fare will cost far more than the petrol consumed, to say nothing about time. I feel a little bad to add to the traffic congestion at the kindergarten, which is partly why I want to cycle.

of course cannot expect people to stay at home forever.

However, what you can do is to minimise the danger of getting yourself killed.

Stay at home forever.

so how you expect them to tell you to give way??

shout from far??

lets be realistic about this, dont expect him to stop and give way to you.

when you walk and someone block you, you also wont stop and ask them to give you space right?? you will tell them no give way while walking towards them.

I cycle from Bedok to Tanjong Pagar each day and have no issue on the roads. Case of choosing your route appropriately. Cars normally mess each other up and create their own jams which I just cycle past.

Wow, that's like one of my ex-colleague that jogs from Jurong to Harborfront everyday for work [laugh]

I have no issue with those who cycle on pavement politely. There are those who cycle damn fast and expect pedestrians to give way to them. Hope they crash and burn!

these r the trouble maker type n the other group are those who ride across

pedestrain crossing at the last second and those scum that dash across zebra crossing [rifle]

frankly i have no problems with cyclist on pavement that rides slowly and most importantly, politely.

It is very dangerous to ride on the road.... [sweatdrop]

both pedestrian and cyclist should learn accommodate one another.

Ask that ah yew to try cycle on the road and see how it feels, without his escort of course. <_<

That mushroom got cycle one meh? Probably the only time he cycle is in his private gym.

There are some cyclists that thinks the entire pavement bleongs to them and would expect you to give way to them.

Why can't pedestrains and cyclists share the pavement in harmonly?

I am both a pedestrain and cyclist at one point or the other, if I'm on the bike, I would ring my bell and wave to say thanks for those

who had given way.

Cheers, walk and ride safe.

let me say some rubbish...if they want to force the bicycle that used to be on pavement onto the road...they better think about how to control the bicycle on the road first...don't s--t first then remember forgotten to pull down pants... [shakehead] [shakehead]

They just do it like they do for pedestrians. The onus of care is on the driver [laugh]

Then ban motorcycles on the roads as well? They also not built to withstand impact. Its how to cyclist behaves on the road. If he cycles dangerously of course will get into accident whether he is on the road or pavement. I have been cycling on the road almost daily for the past 5-6years and only had to swerve to avoid a truck once because he overtook too closely. Never got into an accident. If its time for you to die you'll die even if you stay on the pavement. A driver can lose control and mount the curb and hit you right?

Even crossing the roads when the lights are in your favor also can get hit and killed by a driver with no license. Cannot expect people to stay at home forever right?

Yes. You are right. When one is fated to die, and it

(edited)

I always find it amusing when the internet has a lot of people protesting against aggressive cyclists on the footpaths but I have never seen anyone in real life actually stand up to one. Personally, if a cyclist on the pavement gives a single ding on his bell from behind, I would move over if it is not crowded. If crowded, I tell them to dimount as it is too crowded to cycle. If they ring their bell incessantly, I just tell them no need to ring so much. if from behind, I would refuse to give way and ask them to cycle on the grass strip if they are ringing rudely so many times.

Now the TP should also start warning those numerous cyclists who cycle on the wrong side of the road. In fact, if more are pushed onto the road this number could rise. It creates more dangers for other road cyclists as there is a real risk of a head on collision or being forced out into traffic to avoid these twits.

Neutral Newbie

True, more people, more propensity for gridlock. But with Singapore, and the rest of the world, we are becoming more urbanised, so is the car the best long-term solution to moving people from A to B in a modern city?

I for one love driving. Have an Alfa which explains things. But I got tired of perpetual jams everytime I went to work and basically asked myself what is the point. Since riding the bike much happier, healthier and productive. Plus I take the same time to and from work on average plus have more cash in my wallet.

Understand it isn't for everyone. But I have given up one car space on the road and all I ask is for a small space for my bike when drive past and some courtesy as a fellow road user. I obey the road rules as well.

unfortunately.. most drivers will not think that way.. they will see you as slowing them down.. they don't see you as giving them a car space..

btw.. i commute by bicycle too...
