The_Bear Turbocharged August 12, 2013 Share August 12, 2013 Korea is a language not dialect, we can have anyhowsayo but not lei hou mah, or Bakayarou but not knnbccb I think the ban is archaic and should be lifted. What about cable TV? You can get hokkien programme on Starhub too. Like that means what? If you can afford it, then our national policy is incosequential? If you have money, you should know better than to speak to your decendants in dialect?
Maxus-MIFA9 Supersonic August 12, 2013 Share August 12, 2013 (edited) Should allow dialect in Singapore ..... Brought my kids to Taiwan and they don't understand Hokkien. Brought them to HK and they also don't understand Cantonese. Brought them to MY, they don't understand simple Bahasar Malay. Brought them to China, Hainan Island and they too, don't understand Hainanese .... Not like my time in the 60's, learnt & speak, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Malay, Hainanese and a bit of Hindi .... We can speak Eng.. but not really that good. mandarin .. worse.. how many of us can hold a proper conversation in mandarin without needing to add in some english? It's a matter of whether one wants to speak proper or rojak. It takes some effort initially. After that, it is so natural. Unfortunately, most choose not to and prefer Singlish. I guess it's more efficient way of communicating within Singaporeans.

Scion Turbocharged August 12, 2013 Share August 12, 2013 i think LKY himself can speak English, Malay, Mandarin and Hokkein fluently not sure he knows other dialects although he's a Hakka himself think LHL can speak Russian too, other than English, Mandarin and Malay which is why i dun understand why they want majority of Singaporeans to know only 2 languages (English + mother tongue) maybe they think they are the smart ones, so they can master 4 languages easily, while the rest of ordinary folks cannot? i still think we should learn 3-4 as well, as in English + mother tongue + Malay (Singaporean Chinese learn Mandarin + own dialect)
Mightymito 1st Gear August 12, 2013 Share August 12, 2013 My dialect group also quite rare to hear people speaking...Hock Chew....think only about 2-3% in SG knows how to speak and mostly they are older folks and many have passed on already... Speak it to my late dad, ah ma, uncles and relatives (from my dad's side)...my mom's side are mostly Cantonese as some of them are still Msians. Now only hear it outside when those foreigners (usually from PRC, sarawak or Batu Pahat) and will chit chat abit with them. Will definitely teach my kids how to speak when I have them too... Those people will tell who that when they are grouped according to surname like in school all the Ting Ting Tong Tong will be grouped together
Scion Turbocharged August 12, 2013 Share August 12, 2013 my father, though he doesn't know English, can speak Mandarin + Hakka, + Hokkien + Teochew + Cantonese fluently and a bit of Malay I'm ashamed to confess I only understand two dialects in Hokkien & Teochew.... I don't even know Hakka, which is my father's dialect... tried to pick it up last time but simply can't do it

I think Fuzhou is the dialect you are saying... Hock Chew (is Hokkien prenounciation of Fuzhou). My mom's family is Hock chew, my dad is Hokkien. Most Hock Chews are coffee shops owners in Singapore/Malaysia... I still remember my 1st day in Kingergarten was a shock... coz i only speak hock chew then... teacher came to my hm and spoke to my parents that this cannot go on...coz no one understands wat i was saying... And I luv cantonese songs... ↡ Advertisement
