External Hard Disk - Reliable

Never use external HDD to back up your data. Use DVD instead. External HDD is not reliable at all cos many things can fail especially the USB cable. I don't use external HDD anymore. Only use DVD. Make 2 copies instead of 1 and you won't lose your data. Please bear in mind that you'll have to replace the DVD every 10 years to avoid DVD failure.

Why not blu-ray? It's highly scratch resistant compared to dvd.

I also consider cost when i do back up. I read that those gold coated disc would be able to last 30 years but not sure true or not. Ordinary DVD should be able to last 10 years but will depend on the climatic condition. If you live near the sea, I can only say bad luck...hee hee hee.

But how many DVDs you need to backup 1TB? [laugh]

But yeah, I waiting for BD price to drop. :)

HDD nowadays anytime gone, backup important files to hdd and online server.

I recently bought a external hard disk

backup plus seagate 3T

after 2 weeks

it die on me and cannot be read because it is now RAW

had to go to a data recovery centre

the questions are:

1. are there any reliable reports on the most reliable hard disk for consumers (not talking about hard disk to be used in NASA space craft)

2. if yes what brand - Lacie

3. backup sounded a bit ridiculous, used a backup drive to backup another backup drive

4. most company writes life span of 5years but warranty only 3years

5. backup with DVD - any issues, backward compatibility

thanks

nope the answers provided will be useful for others too

1. Reliable report always quoted 99.95% or 99.98 reliablility. No report will quote 100% for x years.

2. Any brand. Nowadays most brands manufacture from same country.

3. Current trend is NAS with RAID since price has lower by a lot.

4. Most company give 3 years warranty with option of additonal 2 yrs. Sometimes need to ask.

5. Limited storage size and prone to scratches.

I dont know. My first portable hdd is a 300gb WD My Elements. It has been like 10 years plus and yet to fail. It is now being used as a digital tv recorder hdd and still going strong.

I transferred 2Tb data to another HDD when I upgraded to a 4Tb new desktop storage.

Now thinking of getting another 4Tb desktop storage as the current one left with little space already. My car camera video footage archiving is eating up lots of hdd space. Both my 2Tb and 4Tb almost full liao.

It is best to buy a NAS with 2 internal HDD configured under RAID 1. RAID 1 configuration means the 2 HDD would mirror each other, so if 1 fails, can simply pop a good one in and it will copy everything from the other HDD. That means you spend twice the money but get only the capacity of one, but definitely worth it.

A cheap NAS from Dlink would cost about $150. Synology would cost more but more established brand. And configuring is very straight forward.

Internal HDD must buy those NAS category that can last longer, just bought a 3TB that cost $165 from Lazada:

https://www.lazada.sg/products/wd-red-3tb-nas-35-internal-hard-disk-i134782395-s156919135.html?spm=a2o42.searchlist.list.17.2eb835e6XMorWb&search=1

My NAS used to have only 1 HDD, and always worry about HDD failure that would wipe out > 10 years of my phots/videos. Now can sleep better.
