Preventive maintenance

Hi all,

My wife is driving a 8 yrs old Toyota with 130K mileage. I'm thinking what sort of preventive maintenance to take note to avoid car breaking down on the road or fail to start in morrning. She uses the car to send my gal to school, so reliability is our top priority since we rely on it everyday. Those bro who have experience maintaining car till 200K km and beyond, pls share what parts should i be taking note or change before it fail on me.

Things like radiator, water pump, fuel pump, alternator, air-flow sensor, what else?? How long can they last?

refer back to your user manual, other than those stuff, things to take note includes:

1) Wheel bearing ( replace when its damaged, no preventive mainteinance)

2) Drive shaft & boot cover (replace only when its damaged, you will find plenty of grease at the wheel if the boot cover is broken..not preventive mainteinance)

3) Power steering oil replacement (not included in the owner manual but its good to do if you are using hydralic power steering)

4) car alignment (not included in the owner manual but its good to do every year)

5) bushing for CV and other joints should be free inspection if done during Preventive maintenance.(by 150K, most of these rubbers would have worn out)

6) alternator- not preventive maintenance but experience mech can tell the condition by simply hearing the noise. Ask the workshop to check, should be free during Preventive maintenance.

7) Absorber- by 150K, most absorber should be worn (mine over 200K but still fine) ask the mech to check, should be free during Preventive maintenance..

8) Rust- check on the undercarriage and exhaust pipe. Should be free during Preventive maintenance.

9)engine gasket- if your engine starts to lost oil, your engine gasket its gone, Altis and toyota uses rubber gasket and should be worn around 6th to 9th yr.

10) radiator hose and radiator top and bottom- these parts are rubber and plastic and will wear over time... however, toyota doesnt seems to have such problem within the 10th yrs period.. Korean car, on the other hand, will usually have crack radiator top/bottom (plastic) on the 7th to 9th yrs period.

thats all I can think off...

$150 is just e timing belt n labour? How come u never change e waterpump n all related bearings n tensioner at e same time?

Their lifespan is abt same n u sud change all together. Otherwise very soon yr waterpump n bearings spoil ty change...u pay labour charge one more time cos all these parts at same place.

Next time u hv to change waterpump n bearings u pay labour charge again.

N dun forget to flush yr water jacket n change coolant at e same time.

I remember I change the bearing of my waterpump during my elantra time but it was never recomended by toyota to replace the bearing for my vios, in fact, when I go to the stokist to get my parts, all of them told me the same thing, just get the pully and the belts.... It doesnt make any sense to me cause bearing is a wear n tear parts, in fact, it should wear even faster than the pully, how come nobody change for Vios?? Anyone driving Vios could advise??

Supersonic

ok...thx for the info....the AD charged me $150 for changing the drive belt....when warranty is over, i'll source outside n get cheaper workshop to change stuff

there are many belts. for $150, i doubt they changed the timing belt which is the most labour intensive belt job.

no, it's not the timing belt (in fact, i think my car uses a timing chain)....it's the engine drive belt...

Optra timing belt chng at 60k km. Usually all wil chng all as a package as life all abt same n in same location so u pay labour only once.

But last change i drag to 70k km. This time i wil drag to 80k km. Now already 75 k km. Still ok.

I thought is density and use hydrometer to t3st

hydrometer is use to test battery water. Brake fuild, once mixed with water will turn acidic, thus, checking the PH will tells whether the brake fluid need to be change.
