Simplecar 4th Gear September 19, 2013 Share September 19, 2013 but how bout let same class compete with same class while quota remains the same? It will still lead to the same number of cars on the road? In part its because the lower income can see how other 1st world countries manage social equity issues between the upper & the lower. Hence the comparison & grousing. Not going for full powered well fare state like Nordic countries but at least don't be at the other end of the spectrum. Totally subscribing to willing buyer & willing seller concept is a complete business model. Though Richard Carlson in his book mentioned.....who said life was fair or even meant to be fair........ I can accept that total fairness is merely aspirational.....however, there should still be steps to instill fairness. What is social equity? how about economic equity? educational equity? Why must there by equity when it comes to a car? Anyone with a driving license can join a car-coop for a reasonable fee. Nzy Twincharged September 19, 2013 Share September 19, 2013 Compare to where may i ask ? when was the last time you take public transport to work daily? I have been taking public transport or cycling to work almost everyday. Car only used when I feel like it. Even on weekends I am starting to take public transport also cuz my son loves to ride in the MRTs. Haven't been late for work before in the past 4 years. Most areas can be reached by bus or train right? Late at night either take taxi or bus lo. There are buses that run till very late in the night. How did those people with no cars move around Singapore? If you look at the statistics, there are less than 1 million vehicles in Singapore. Even if all are private cars, there is still 4+ million people without cars. Do you mean to say these 4+ million people cannot travel about in Singapore? Assuming that's the view of majority of citizens, then I guess no choice, I must accept as the majority feel this way.

I will call since I seldom take taxis. Bus/MRT not reliable? How many unsuccessful trips did you have in your whole life taking bus/mrt? If MRT and bus stop early, you can always change your lifestyle to suit it. Else, be prepared to pay more for taxis. Call a limo if you need. Book in advance, at 2am, 4am, if you wish. This is not a strong reason to get a car. Not for me.

Yup, I had good music when I took train to work back then. I had more discretionary money in my pockets. IF not for the distance to my current office, I would likely have sold my car and taken train/bus.
Kezg1 5th Gear September 19, 2013 Share September 19, 2013 Here's the problem with the way things are. People only see the supposed short term gains of their suggestion. Most of the gripes and complains about the COE system come from people who can't afford or don't want to secure a COE at its current price. These are often green eyed monsters who fail to see the long term problem of their supposed solution. They want to penalize the rich but they have not thought about the consequences when they of their suggestion in the future. What happens when they eventually have the money for a car? How will these people react to the silly suggestions they previously suggested? I think this is the culture of Singapore. Everyone wants to compete with each other and do each other in. Look at the way people drive on the roads. They're always trying to compete. When people signal their intention to filter in, the car behind will speed up and prevent the car from filtering in. Have they ever placed themselves in the other person's shoes? On the whole issue, its a waste of time trying to re-define here and there...if only they reduce the number of COE every month.. I can say when the ALL vehicles population comes to about 650k....confirmed no jam..haha.. I'm dreaming
Hydrocarbon Turbocharged September 19, 2013 Share September 19, 2013 Yes Singapore is by nature competitive but maybe that's why we progress so fast (there is a price for everything). On another note, with regards to filtering, i find these people "filtering" in are actually queue cutters. I always give way if i see they are "genuine", i.e. filtering in early. But if they bypass a long queue and drive right up to the junction and "filter" then i am afraid no way. Most of the time, I just drive relax, even if filter in a little late, also just let them join, coz even when I sit taxi, sometimes figure out the road a little late too. See how they drive also la, if drive nicely and signal, I'll let them in if it's safe, else if drive like gangster, just block him / her all the way lor.. but how bout let same class compete with same class while quota remains the same? If too rich cannot buy BnB car? So, the rich people cannot eat at hawker centre too? Coz they taking up a seat which could otherwise be used by a poor person? No reason what right? Housing, ya la, coz people need a place to stay. But for other things, why must set up class distinction, and skew the playing field again? Car is a luxury, let those who want it the most, and those who want to pay the most for what they want get it.

Kar_lover Supercharged September 20, 2013 Share September 20, 2013 I think this picture describe everything So what's your point? Of course equal and fair (just) is not the same thing. Doesn't take a geniuus to understand. And how does your picture describe "everything"? What is this "everything"?

Carnoob Supercharged September 20, 2013 Share September 20, 2013 I would say, the picture he posted.. On the left is democracy.. on the right is communism.. Something like that, equality only means we have the same foundation and not the same result (small boy still can't see the match). So I think that's what LTA is trying to do. Same foundation but to each and every single individual - different results. Since everyone NEEDS a car, I give you equal chance of getting COE with less branded car but it DOESN'T MEAN you will GET A CAR. So no point asking them to relook, it would have the same stupid outcome. Same with property prices etc... oops OT
OmOm 5th Gear September 20, 2013 Share September 20, 2013 Should it be the other way around? As in: There is equality in (true) communism. Everyone gets the same regardless of who he is and what he puts into the system. There is justice in (true) democracies. Everyone has the chance to be lifted to the same heights regardless of who he is. I would say, the picture he posted.. On the left is democracy.. on the right is communism.. ↡ Advertisement
