I scared of earthquake rather than 9-11 attack [:/]

Yeah, just a jolt will be enough to shift the various pieces out.

The pre-fab buildings don't have a lattice of framework to spread the loads around.

Its seem like our "Quality Control" checks getting worst ..... [sly]

Singapore used to be very strict on QC in the past .... [sweatdrop]

In the past, our PR was the most sought after too, without $1 million investment, you can wait long long to apply for it.

That was why only the rich Indos were able to get it then.

The quality standard in SG is going down.

By now, the finger pointing should have began. All will use whatever supporting documents to cover their arse.

1 scrapgoat will be found eventually to take the blame, instead of tightening up procedures to prevent future occurances.

Discharge from water/sprinkler pipe may have put pressure & load on the ceiling board, causing it to give way and collapse.

Wonder is metallic perforated panel ceiling the solution?

The pipes carrying the water are not sitting on the ceiling boards.

They are hung between the ceiling and the ceiling boards. Just pay a visit to some carparks and you can see how these pipes are mounted.

If such thin pipes are putting such load on the ceiling, I can't imagine what would happen on the bigger pipes carrying water and sewage.

Yes, you're right.

The difference between ICA offering PR for foc and the other where you have to apply based on merits.

Maybe 1% would get it via merits, the other 99% is offered by ICA.

It does make our SG PR looks cheap.

Authorities order JEM mall to be closed and false ceilings to be checked

Inspections by the Building and Construction Authority's (BCA) engineers today (Sep 19) revealed that weight of escaped water from a leaking pipe was the 'likely cause' of JEM mall's ceiling collapse.

The portion of the false ceiling that collapsed was about 50m long and 4m wide. BCA said the water had collected on the ceiling, which then possibly collapsed from the pressure.

The incident left three people injured, and some shops and the walkway in the mall were flooded from the water gushing out from the burst pipe.

BCA added that it has ordered for affected areas of the building to be closed off and that a professional engineer has to check all the mall's false ceilings and investigate the incident.

However, the structural integrity of the building is said to be unaffected. In its official statement, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said:

"On 18 September 2013, a portion of the false ceiling (approximately 50 metres long, 4 metres wide) at level one of JEM Shopping Mall collapsed.

"Site inspections by BCA engineers early this morning revealed that there was a leak in the water-pipe.

"The weight of the water, which collected on the false ceiling, was a likely cause of the false ceiling collapse.

"The structural integrity of the building is not affected.

"Nevertheless, in the interest of public safety, BCA has ordered the building owner to close off the affected area.

"BCA has also ordered the building owner get a Professional Engineer to check all the false ceilings in the mall and investigate the nature of the false ceiling collapse.

"The building owner has also asked its consultants to check the water pipes for any other signs of leakage."
