Authorities order JEM mall to be closed and false ceilings to be checked

Inspections by the Building and Construction Authority's (BCA) engineers today (Sep 19) revealed that weight of escaped water from a leaking pipe was the 'likely cause' of JEM mall's ceiling collapse.

The portion of the false ceiling that collapsed was about 50m long and 4m wide. BCA said the water had collected on the ceiling, which then possibly collapsed from the pressure.

The incident left three people injured, and some shops and the walkway in the mall were flooded from the water gushing out from the burst pipe.

BCA added that it has ordered for affected areas of the building to be closed off and that a professional engineer has to check all the mall's false ceilings and investigate the incident.

However, the structural integrity of the building is said to be unaffected. In its official statement, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said:

"On 18 September 2013, a portion of the false ceiling (approximately 50 metres long, 4 metres wide) at level one of JEM Shopping Mall collapsed.

"Site inspections by BCA engineers early this morning revealed that there was a leak in the water-pipe.

"The weight of the water, which collected on the false ceiling, was a likely cause of the false ceiling collapse.

"The structural integrity of the building is not affected.

"Nevertheless, in the interest of public safety, BCA has ordered the building owner to close off the affected area.

"BCA has also ordered the building owner get a Professional Engineer to check all the false ceilings in the mall and investigate the nature of the false ceiling collapse.

"The building owner has also asked its consultants to check the water pipes for any other signs of leakage."

The same BCA gave them award leh, now can they revoke the award?
