Question for Car Servicing

Servicing can be quite cheap, if you bring your own oil and other parts. I used to drive OPC. But park 100% outdoors. Although very low mileage, but under weather elements, there will be wear and tear (batt etc).

Most servicing abt 100$ plus can do already. Get workshop change oil and check for you. Then decide if you want the part changed. Car wun karput if not serviced, but small money for the driving experience and safety re-assurance.. why not..

Thats cos ty mark-up on yr bill for all the stuff u get from them.

U bring yr own, then ty wil lose that part of their profits.

But if the penalty fee is not too high, I wud still prefer to bring all my own parts, oils etc. Dun know what crappy old stock...bought on offer....stuff ty put in our cars.

I buy my own, I control the quality.

some WS use non OEM stuff but charge us OEM stuff. i am a strong advocate of boycotting WS that impose penalty

then you and your friends have more to know about engine oil and how car should be properly maintenanced.

Obviously you know theories on the back of your hand, but have no clue about how they work in real life.

i disagree...

theories on oil change intervals are based on empirical findings, not just make up theories or self assumption. Especially so when words spoken from backyard WS.

Hi Everyone,

Just to revive this thread as I'm new to servicing my car etc. I have a 5 year old Mazda 3, used to be maintained by my parents but now they are letting me take on responsibility of the maintenecne of the car. Could I ask how does car servicing go about? The car is due for 120 000km servicing already.

I read that theres a more or less fixed items that need to be changed for 120 000km servicing (e.g. engine oil, spark plugs). What should I do actually? I would like to try buying my own parts and bringing them to the workshop, but in that case will the workshop actually also do the diagnosis for me and check if there are other parts that need changing?

Thank you!

ask ur parents whr they do the servicing first then chk w the svc ctr. do a search for servicing / major servicing and u should find the relevant topics.

Thanks Fuelsaver, its always been serviced at the MAzda AD. I'm thinking this time of going to an outside mechanic to do and also purchase some parts outside. Alright so i'll do this:

1. Dig out service records

2. Find on forum typically what is changed in a 120k servicing for mazda 3

3. Find a reputable workshop

4. Buy some parts outside

5. go to workshop and do servicing. They will also check what else needs fixing and do accordingly.

That shld be ok yes?

Thanks!

should b ok. if ur mz3 has no issues all this while, u should have plenty of time to do some homework. meantime, u can also chk out youtube for some car repair related videos. that should better prepare u from being bs by ws. best of luck.

er bro during that time was the car engine turned on regularly.

Cars that are not driven daily will die fast. For example the engine oil will start sinking to the lower portion, and thicken and lose fuidity.

If your wife or someone has been regularly running your engine, it helps immensely. If not, well, go fer the servicing and u may also need to look at your battery too.

For longer periods (above a year) when u r away, i am told the battery is removed from engine compartment. As for the engine oil i am not sure. Some "experts" say drain the engine completely but the worry is rust builds up. Another "expert" says feel up completely to the brim the engine oil (i.e. allow no room for circulation) but later on before u drive u need to drain out all the oil and replace with new one at the recommended levels.

Er can some bros here clarify on this? I am also confused on this.

Past 6 months, most time I was working in oversea, so my car half year mileage only 1000km,

but half year interval time servicing come, can I skip this servicing and wait another half year?

Thanks a lot

Not all WS will bs. they use the fear factor. Example, they say that if you dun change this or that, your car wil XXXX. Then the service advisor will keke show concern for you, your car, your family etc.

Some very good at this without being pushy.

i only strong in certain parts, still learning.

How do you all learn? I've been trying to learn some stuff here and there to avoid workshop BS. My main weakness is the lack of mechanical ability :) Not confident of pulling apart parts to have a look myself...
