SCDF recruit commits suicide at training insitute, shortly after enlistment

A recruit from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) committed suicide at National Service Training Institute, Civil Defence Academy this morning.

(REC) Edwin Ong Koon Chwee  was from the 139 Intake, Charlie company, PES B. He jumped from the 4th floor of his dormitory block and was found dead between 3 and 4am.

The recruit had just enlisted into SCDF on Tuesday earlier this week.

SCDF has since released a statement on Edwin’s death on its Facebook page. It said that SCDF is providing all necessary assistance to the family during this difficult time. The Director of the NSTI has spoken to the family and reiterated SCDF’s support to them during this time of bereavement.

RIP ...

The only ppl that are devastated are his parents and close ones .... hopefully time will heal their pain ...

Sigh, seems like he comes from a family with lots of stressors.

From his parting message, he seems to have severe inferiority complex, low self esteem. He has many people to thank for, including the officer and bunk mates of SCDF. and yet he felt useless.

There is some sort of sarcasm directed towards his bunk mates and officer, imo...

he's known them for 3 days.

If he's a blur king as he confesses, then maybe he's not the most popular guy in the bunk bah.

But i doubt anything significant has been done/spoken to him, since it's only few days.

Dunno about SCDF but in the army, first week is always tekan week so they can subjugate you and let you know who is boss.

His post gave me cancer.....

Anyway, I have met many people like him (even for JC batch). Had to counsel my bunkmate in BMT because everyone kept picking on him. My advice to him was to just f care the rest of the section and let them say whatever they want.

Of course, I wasn't a very popular guy in the section as well.

hmm not in my experience in the newer army and especially in schools. First week is always getting you bedded in. Sure there's some disciplining about regimentation but generally the instructors will just enforce the regimentation but don't really tekan you until later on.

The tough or demanding stuff is always later.

Like u don't do fast march in the 1st week. It's always the 2nd or 3rd week lol.

The stress of being a misfit. I beliece it does lead to suicide in some case.

Maybe it was just my Company/plt/section then but first week was when they would physically (pushups and the like) and mentally torture you.

I think I'm younger than you (if you're 1981) so my experience would be more recent too.

Some people are just born slow or blur - Army should take responsibility if they cannot accommodate such people and they commit suicide.

Another example from my BMT PLT was 1 guy who somehow just took a damn long time to dress up and was constantly late. I wasn't in his section so I don't know why he takes so long but it surely wasn't for a lack of trying since he was so stressed up about it. His "solution" was to sleep in his uniform.

Poor chap.

Think he suicide not due to enlistment but his own personal life and his family. Mentioned he has slight depression, looks like depression has taken away another precious life!

At least the slow dresser knows how to adapt. Cannot adapt, then it'll become stress out.
