inlinesix Hypersonic March 25, 2015 Share March 25, 2015 Insurance for such cars are always priced at ridiculous premiums. That's why you do not even see much of the current version of the mx-5 on the roads. How much do you think it will cost for insurance? I'm looking at BRZ/86 which is around 150 to 160k. Honestly, i will prefer to take those since it is a 2+2, bigger engine and more horsepower. MX-5 1.5 if priced around lower end of 130k should be more attractive to potential buyers. Lifestyle is not always practical. MX-5 is nvr about power. ↡ Advertisement
Eyke Supercharged March 25, 2015 Author Share March 25, 2015 (edited) If the 2.0 uses the same 14:1 Skyactive G 2.0, then it might have at least 165hp, also Cat B. some say: "2.0-liter SKYACTIV engine developing 155 bhp (115 kW) and 148 lb-ft (200 Nm) of torque." but in Sg road context, the 1.5 should be great too as is high rev'able Edited March 25, 2015 by Eyke
Watwheels Supersonic March 25, 2015 Share March 25, 2015 (edited) How much do you think it will cost for insurance? Enough to put ppl off. The exact number I can't say since it's subjected to coverage, excess, NCD, age and etc. The insurance companies are out to make money out of open top "sports car". After watching top gear's recent review on the latest gen mx-5 it's very light(under a tonne) be it manual or auto. The 2.0L will be slightly over a tonne? Must be quite fun to drive given the 50/50 weight distribution. Edited March 25, 2015 by Watwheels

Insurance cost for all open top is always high with small pool of cars & higher claims cost.

The +2 seats at the back of the 86/BRZ basically can be use as a storage only, to put it bluntly. Any adult (even asians) will find it uncomfortable to sit in that position for a 10-15 mins drive. The rev-vy/torque-y nature of the Mazda engine couple with a body of just under 1 tonne, will make it a fun drive I hope - if continuing with the spirit of how the MX-5 was first engineered. The MX-5 will definitely sing on the B-roads but even in Singapore, daily drives can be less mundane with it. As many has said, the MX-5 is not about the number of horses but rather it is about "the rider and horse, as one". There are days which I would love for the car to go faster but that feeling quickly went away. 131bhp (hope it would be 129bhp instead) is a good balance. What you want is a car that feels raw and have a "sense of urgency on the get-go". That said, with a bigger engine and more horses, it will probably cut a few seconds off the laps on the track. The reason why you get a 2 door car is because you like it not because you want to please your passengers. If you're not married, who cares? I like owning a 2 door car cos I don't have to give lifts to people I don't like. That said, I don't really like the seating position of the BRZ. As a tall guy, I hardly have any room in the car and I can't drop the top. The new MX5 looks stunning but I hope they ditch the 4 bolt PCD for the 5 bolt PCD. I want to have more rim options. Not exactly comfortable when your posture is a little weird in the seat.

ahboy86 3rd Gear June 16, 2015 Share June 16, 2015 Any idea when the new mx-5 will be landing on our shore?? Quite interested in it too. much likely Q3/4 of 2015. The PI ones are already open for booking. PI bringing in the 1.5litre, last offered to me, basic price starting 138k include COE, not subjected to CEVS rebates yet. Eurokars will be bringing in the 2.0 version apparently; expect it to go for around 170k plus and above and should be a high spec model coming with Mazda's MZD Connect, LED headlamps, LDW, etc etc (those latest goodies found in the new range of KODO models).

ahboy86 3rd Gear June 17, 2015 Share June 17, 2015 any PI u would recommend ? I was quoted by Garage R; I find the person in touch with me, June, very professional and they gave me all the specifications and equipment to know what i am in for. They also advised on which variant is best value for money. Downpayment is 40k thou. You might want to ask Garage R. The other reliable PI i reckon is Vincar but have not approached them for MX5.

Oh well. ↡ Advertisement
