This is a correction on post 10. Error bold and underline.

Bro Detach8, u are right. Straight water is the best for Singapore climate. However, putting in some coolant will be beneficial for lubricating the water pump and to prevent rust. 70/30 coolant is my take.

Best is pre-mixed.

Else use distilled water and add coolant.

The coolant / water ratio will depends on what is the overall expected temperature.

Yes. I agree.

And it really depends on the relevant car model.

Mine came as pre-mixed and I top it up when the coolant drops below the minimum line.

Top up with pre-mixed or water ?

Those doing timing belt service, please take note of the water ! [rolleyes]

Pre-mixed. It does not require a separate water source.

Nothing beats flushing and replacing your coolant every 1-2 years. If you put it a nice accurate mix of whatever you like... and then leave it in there for 5 years, chances are the guy who flushed and refill with a chin-chye mix of 30/70 or whatever ratio every year is better off.

in the end i bought this urgently.

Urgently, 7-11 is your best friend. Open 24/7. Distilled water only $2 one big bottle.

You buy that for what? Your coolant leaking?

Read carefully. Anti-FREEZE.

Our coolest month is 20+ deg C. Nothing will freeze. Don't waste your money folks.

Its call Coolant in local, not anti frezze.... and like what some members her higlighted, we use it not for the anti-frezze properties, its for lubrcation and anti rust purpose.

Coolant its a must, not a wish....

If a car is losing small amounts of coolant, just top up with water. The system already contains coolant. No need to go and find and pay for simi 50/50 coolant. Why? Because you don't know WTF is in your car right now. If you mix different coolant, there's no guarantees the two are compatible and won't have a chemical reaction.

If your system is kaput and completely empty, in an EMERGENCY situation then just go to the nearest petrol kiosk and pour in water. WON'T DIE ONE.

If you are flushing your coolant tank, then by all means mix a bit of coolant or better still, water wetter.

Why? Because coolant's main property is to prevent freezing. The secondary property is anti-rust and lubrication for water pump. The problem with anti-freeze is that has poorer heat transfer properties. So in Singapore, we do not need anti-freeze, we can easily do with water and a little bit of coolant.

It's OK if you don't believe me... my 16 year old car is running on maybe 90% water. You can do as you believe.

Each to their own. If not new car come include with coolant not just water alone. I still believe the protective nature of coolant. It been widely confirmed that coolant protect your cooling system more compare to water.

Anyway, the Honda 50/50 mixed with the left over distilled water in the engine block become 65/35 mix liao perfect for SG climate.

Of course wont die, putting lesser coolant than recomended wont cause any issue in short term but it will have impact in long terms. Without sufficient lubrication and anti rust, your car wont break down within a day or 2, not even within 3 to 5 yrs, but the damage is done inside. Have you ever seen water pump running on a car which is lack of coolant? If you never seen it before, ask your mechanic how it looks like.. Antifreeze itself (most commonly a chemical called ethylene glycol) doesn't wear out–ever–but the key ingredients are the rust and corrosion inhibitors, and they get used up. The most common inhibitors, silicates for aluminum protection, are used up faster than others.

Like you said, its ok if you dont believe and you may continue with your practice. At the end of the day, its your car and you can even pour engine oil into radiator, nobody can do anything to you. However, telling someone else in a public forum to follow something out of manufacturer recomendation is not something correct (something like 90% water in your post), unless you want to be responsible for damages.

Maxima Cool Aid

No antifreeze, lots of rush inhibitors to prevent rust and corrosion.

I will never put anything else in my car.

:D

If you leave the coolant in your car, however PRECISE your mix is (ha ha) you will have a rusty radiator. Like I said, similar to engine oil, change it more often and you will be fine. I guess we can agree to disagree. If my cooling system breaks down, I will report here.
