Hi all....I am reading everything I can about Singapore nursing but I am confused. I was told that foreigners can take up nursing course without fees with allowance but bonded to certain hospital. Is this true? From WSG website, it is stated 'for Singaporean'. Btw, I am Malaysian. Is there a way to study nursing for a degree holder with work experience without paying? My degree is totally not related to healthcare. I am in my thirties and I was in science stream during my secondary. Appreciate your reply. Thank you.

best to contact any cluster HR and they can advise

Answer is yes BUT probably not under WSQ.

From what I recall, Malaysians can study nursing and be paid an allowance in Singapore and be bonded to a Singapore hospital. But it's not under workfare scheme. Just diploma in nursing. So in short, you can go in but your route will be similar to the average o level students who enter into nursing and not the route where degree holders in Singapore opt for a mid career switch.

Can you do it without paying? Well again depends on hospital. If you are bonded you are paid an allowance. Some places you pay the school fees with your allowance some places the allowance is on top of the school fees meaning your school fees is paid by hospital and you still get your allowance.

As @RadX has said, go ask the HR of the hospital and in addition go ask the nursing schools like NYC or NP if they accept students with your qualifications and if you do get accepted, to check if you will be doing the accelerated program (2 yrs only but for mid career switches with another degree but might be tied specifically to WSQ) or the average diploma in nursing (3 yrs).

Work experience is an advantage but not critical cos it's in an unrelated area and you will be treated as a beginner. An advantage cos you already have an idea how organisations work even before you start and it is assumed you are more mature and independent and confident.

Good luck

Thank you, Philipkee. Your answer is very informative and helpful to me. I know where to start now. Have a pleasant weekend :)

hi

just in addition to what was advised;

pls apply to MOHH ANS and they can "assign" a hospital a sponsor you

MOHH - MOH Holdings

ANS - ASEAN Nursing Scholarship

Its advisable to be sponsored by a hospital so that your nursing employment is assured upon graduation.

There's a set quota for Malaysians (and other foreigners) every year, and if you r self-funded and happen to graduate at the time that this quota is reached, the local heathcare facilities here

would not be able to hire u as a registered nurse for that year.

All the best :)

Thanks, Tkwei. I've read their website. There is not much info about ANS. Instead INS is more detailed. I wrote a message to MOHH to enquire. I hope I can get more info then. The most important thing that I am worried about is am I eligible to this scholarship.

I just moved here 1 month plus. I heard about free studying with allowance from nurses in SGH. I don't mind being bonded as it is only fair to do so. Can i know why are you asking this question?

Hi, I am a diploma holder in chemical engineering. I have a passion for nursing as I didn't do a diploma in nursing couldn't get in any degree. As I have graduated I can't do a diploma again in local poly. Is parkway allied healthcare nursing recognised? Starting pay and further studies available after my diploma in parkway nursing? It will be really appreciated if anyone could answer! Thank you

Curtin has nursing course at balestier campus. Not sure is for a entry level or already nurse.

Polyclinics nurses work quite stressful i see; Even take blood samples (injection) aiyoh!! but mine luckily was Pinoy one ... I even joked with her (make small conversation) ... "your job is sucking blood only during daylight hours how ah??" She laugh it off?? this was when I kenna go polyclinic daily for blood testing 'cos I had dengue.... everyday same nurse almost for over 7 times in 10 days or so

Saf medic boy lagi more stress. i remember I went CMPB to do my blood test. That time still in no stomp but have MCF.

He insert the needle on my left hand and I see his needle going in circle under my skin. I told him he can try on my right as the needle is still in my hand somehow held hostage. He gratefully thank me and change hand. Thank god he manage to draw blood on my right hand.

When I thought it is all over he say your left hand have blood clot he use the bandage gauze and rub the left hand he say to prevent blood clot.

Nurse and medic not easy please be nice to them. When my grandfather was admitted to hospital be be private or government a small treat will brighten their day.

If you are already there, then you don't really want to switch.

I have some friends working in NUH HR if you are asking about studying nurses. But since you are already in SGH, all the best and study hard!

therock, I am there working not as a nurse but other position. I wants to study nursing and havent find a way to do so. I'll see if I am eligible for NUH sponsorship 1st. Thanks..

Your situation no big deal la. At most a little bit of pain only.

I remember my first or second day in Tekong. The medic there was a blur F. During the routine vaccination, he tried to jab me with a used needle (had been used on the fellow before me). Luckily I was alert and sounded off straight away.

Best case if I had been pricked would be multiple days MC for psychological problems. Worst case would be to kanna dunno what aids or HIV from the chap before me. Fellow was one of those man sluts who liked to go clubbing to sleep with random women one.

hi

this might be a better way than going thru ANS,

do ask NUH if they can sponsor u for a NUS nursing degree instead

ANS way is thru a diploma course with Nanyang Poly or NgeeAnn Poly

whichever way u go, you'll be starting in 2018 (April if going poly)

all the best again :)

Schemes to help mid-career switch

Mid-career professionals keen on joining the burgeoning healthcare sector can look to a range of professional conversion programmes (PCPs) to help them make the switch.

Among them are programmes for those who would like to become nurses, dental surgery assistants, diagnostic radiographers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

These PCPs are jointly offered by the Health Ministry and Workforce Singapore, in partnership with post-secondary educational institutions. Besides sponsorship for their course fees, trainees get monthly salary support or training allowance.

Those graduating from the PCPs for nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and diagnostic radiographers will also receive a career transition bonus after the training.

This year, the ministry announced it will increase funding for nursing PCPs so that employers will need to pay only 10 per cent of the training cost. Currently, they may have to pay up to 50 per cent. Employers will also get up to $16,000 for on-the-job training for each nurse who made a mid-career switch.

Former nurses who have not practised for at least a year can ease their way back into work through the Return to Nursing scheme. The scheme was launched in 2000, and enhanced last year with the aim of getting former nurses back to work in the community care sector, in places such as nursing homes and home-care organisations.

The upgraded scheme introduces an up-to-$5,000 bonus for former nurses. Returning nurses will take a refresher course, and those joining the community care sector take elective modules.

Meanwhile, the Agency for Integrated Care has a Senior Management Associate Scheme to attract PMETs into the community care sector. There will be an induction and training programme.

Applicants interested in these programmes can visit www.carecareers.sg or call 1800-650- 6060.
