Reminds me of the time 15 years ago...when I was a chao Houseman in NUH, and my first and only encounter with the first Elected President.

He'd suffered a fall one evening while being warded at Johns Hopkins Wing. I was called to see him. He was fine, but we chatted for a while. He mentioned that his onco nurses also couldn't draw his blood as his veins were too fine. I took one look and reassured him that I could. So I drew his daily bloods for him. Fine needle, one stick, painless. He was very happy, as was I.

He passed away in a couple more years.

Great man. Truly the People's President. He will be missed.

Thinking back, the safest place should be the hosiptal where one can find many kind of medicines & drugs to cure a person.

But it also the place where mass infections could take place..... :ouch-it-hurts:

So far, SAR had spreaded a few years back (in 2002 or 2003) where it claimed a few doctors & health care staff lives and now Hep C ... :lll._.:

I go to great lengths to avoid hospitals as its an orgy of viruses, bacteria, germs from people with all sorts of illnesses gather  [scholar].  To me, its the 'dirtiest' place...  [lipsrsealed]

Not very true and perhaps not too fair for the health workers actually.

Generally, there is no close contact to warrant claims of increased infections between people in the hospital.

The dirtiest place IMO is the childcare because its the primary place where infectious diseases spread most wantonly between members of the population who are still developing their immune system.

Yep, agreed tt childcare centre esp to the young child who got very low immunity. A child may get infected with different HMFD few times in d centre.

But d disease infected in hospital is more deadly. Ok, SARS can be excused cos at tt time, no one knew how deadly as both public n health care staff are affected. But not for Hep C which most hospitals know what it is. At the end of d day is d possibility of one or two health care worker attitude not adhering to handling procedure or getting complacent over times. Thus accident happen. By then, for tis case, too late many were alrdy affected as d effect took some times. I sincerely hope SGH can find out d actual cause soon so d existing kidney patients can continue their dialysis routine without worries.

you misread me. not referring to heathcare workers [confused]  but the place. its a hospital, where sick people with all kind of illness go.

you may not need to be physically in contact with the sick, but inadvertently be in contact to what they have touched, door knobs, lift buttons, tap etc etc... of course, personal hygiene important here. But, more importantly its those air borne ones.

Anyway, thats just my view. If I need to go there, I wear 95 mask. :D  maybe i am paranoid.

With regards to childcare, its really depends on the parents..ie don't send their kids to childcare when they are sick, so it wld not spread to theirs...unfortunately, we still get those inconsiderate ones..

Many infectious viruses (and even bacteria) are not too viable outside of the human body. Most are not airborne, for example, Ebola. The scariest one we encountered was SARS.

And our skin is the best barrier against them. Even if surface germs go inside our lungs (breathing) or gastrointestinal tract (accidental) swallowing, if it is not the kind of virus to invade the lungs or gastrointestinal tract (let's say Hep C), there is no chance of infection at all. Even if it is the kind that infects lungs and gastrointestinal tracts, the germ count transmitted in this manner is still usually not sufficient to cause a full blown disease (a critical number of the same germ type is required). Of course, it is still recommended to wash hands and so on. Good hygiene is still very important in disease prevention. Hospitals also sanitize these surfaces regularly. All institutions do so in fact.

Close person to person contact (sneezing, coughing) etc are more risky.

There is also this period known as the incubation phase when the children (or even adults) act as the carriers without displaying symptoms. So the parents sometimes can't tell either. The more evolved strains of viruses nowadays do not elicit obvious symptoms in some infected patients, resulting in these patients becoming carriers or super carriers.

IMO, live human carriers of viruses are still much more infectious compared to the external surfaces contacted by patients.

The single big hairy elephant in the room that has absolutely nothing to do with the cover-up delay in press release.

who has the power to suppress the information?

who benefited from the information being suppressed?

and who has the power to assign blame?
