Im not driving a volvo diesel so cant verify.. But chipping it up via piggyback (racechip ulti) will give u good gains. The overall driving experience is improved tremendously (faster acceleration and a smoother non laggy pickup) on my bmw 3.

 

Best part is.. Its a plug n play. Anytime can remove.

If you visit the official Racechip website you will see that for most diesel engine cars the performance increase is more dan the petrol engine versions. Easily more dan 30% increase in both hp and torque. It's plug & play to the MAP sensor (Mass Air Pressure) and can be easily removed during servicing. What's good about it is the power increase does not override the factory ecu power limit or safety to the engine operating perimeters. You can read about it at the German website.

Would prefer to listen to bros here that has experience and users' reviews. 

What I am curious is whether this tuning for more power has a detrimental effect to the service life of the diesel particulate filter? You don't get power for free. 

 

yes, this is what I am concern also.

I have asked a few tuners, most reply the don't tune D2.

some say tuned before but not in SG.

 

 

I am also concern other aspects like will car vibrates?

I'm quite interested in this too. My S80 D2's excellent with fuel economy but performance leaves much to be desired. I know another option is the RICA tuning but I don't hear much about it, but it seems more convenient to just flash the ECU rather than having another chip permanently connected to the engine. Any thoughts?

racechip wise, you gotta be tech savvy to know your engine specs well to see if its benficical, some bros here installed it and felt that it was more powerful, but not in all cases.... am driving a s60 t5 with a k03 turbo (Same as GTI), apparently Racechip claims that it can do 300 horses after installing, but k03's bottleneck max hp is around 250hp, so how can you up the extra 50 horses? it cant, its been proven by Hit and Run Matt colour orange colour Marcus's s60, only doing 248hp on crank in dyno after installing the racechip.

 

local tuner wise, there is a self proclaimed Volvo SPECIALIST workshop in Bartley(some of you guys just named the workshop),  went over to ask the boss on my ride, he confidently told me increase 10-20% horse, same thing, k03 only can max 250 horse, another salesman talk trying to bulls**t me.  you can try contacting the boss, can promise up till the sky, when comes to results and you want dyno for results, maybe you wont ever get it, just like Hit and Run Marcus case.  you can refer to the link here on the Hit and Run Marcus Tuning Incident here....Not suprised someone blew the whistle.....  http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700072-mte-garage-bartley-biz-personal-experience/page-4 

 

Volvo nowadays optimizes the car to the max power efficiency, so its better not to outsmart the manufacturer engineers  and stay stock for a more durable engine (unless its polestar which is more conservative and certified with warranty), other wise my 2 cents is stay stock!

read that for Rica...need to send them our ECU?

Im not comfy with flash as I think is irreversible and detectable by vovo.

What I understand about the RICA one is that you do it yourself via this device you buy and you can always flash the original back on before sending your car in for service. Not sure if it saves your original one first or you have to wait for RICA to provide you with what they claim to be the original.

i am not driving a diesel car, but i have experience rather bad one with piggy back.

car manufacturer will not deliberately produce a bad car so it is better to stay stock,

my experience with piggy back was when i were driving a CL7A, the chip tuner can promise your increase in power but it come at a price, the result depends on the tuner, rubbish in rubbish out.

basically piggy back chip is riding on the ecu to "trick"it into believing that all are within the factory spec but in actual fact the car is really do something else.

example, all JDM car is limited to 180km/h so to go around this, the chip "trick"the ecu that it is going at 180km so the engine will not cut off.  sounds good. but hell broke loose when you switch it back from tiptronic mode to auto mode.  the car went in neutral gear to ""protect" itself as i guess the ecu sense that the wheel speed differs from the actual speedo speed.  Imagine yourself in a car doing saying 190km/h on nshw and in neutral gear.  or turning right at a junction and the engine cuts off in an auto car!!! and i can only pump RON 98 as the tuner tune it that way, pump RON 95, the car engine will be "pinging"" the tuning is only as good as the tuner himself.

car manufacturer spend millions in R & D to produce the car and if a chip costing say 1k can improve the performance by 30% then why the car manufacturer dun install it?  best is to keep it stock.  want a more powerful car then buy a more powerful car.

if the long run, durability will be an issue.

my 2 cents worth.

maybe conti car is designed to be tune.

Fc really depends on travel patterns.. Highway yields the best fc of course. After chip up really got difference..

As @X09a_justice said Volvo turbo's are designed to limit the power to manufacturer specs, on the thread he posted it was pretty documented. Best you try to search on the internet and see if anyone has done so successfully before. If not or very limited information then better stay stock.

 

Bmw is more flexible with the design so its easier to squeeze more power using a simple piggyback and its quite documented online (pre B series engine).

so . . .  HW 'enhancement' have always been very reliable in raising the bar - for volvo

of coz, selections on the HW gotta be compatible . . .

touching on the effectiveness to the SW is only viable after this stage
