Get a 6-speed torque convertor automatic and you can live fairly worry free while still getting good performance! and don't have to live with CVT drone also...

Why limit yourself to just 6-speed. Just top up a little bit more and enjoy the 7-speed. Go test drive the Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic transmission. amentosaday Clutched January 18, 2016 Share January 18, 2016 long story short... some are "almost the same" and shared between brands... but not all Audi's SE gave me a "short summary" too. VW is not made in Europe while Audi and the other premiums are. According to his chain of thought, it is easier to ensure quality within Europe. Freeder Hypersonic January 18, 2016 Share January 18, 2016 Thought BMWs' ZF 8-speed is a conventional automatic? I was aware some of the BMWs are using DCT, but up to now I was always under the impression the 8-speed gearbox that's been praised lately wasn't using dual-clutches... Think BMW testing Aisin gear boxes.. Current, new X1 series using them... Even the SE didn't knew abt it

Fels 4th Gear January 26, 2016 Share January 26, 2016 I thought BMW all the way supported ZF.? anything can happen. BMW even buy shock absorbers from kyb and BWI (former Delphi)
Fels 4th Gear January 26, 2016 Share January 26, 2016 All three are dual-clutch gearboxes, but DCTs are a type of transmission and the designs vary - saying they are all the same would be over-generalizing, as if saying Nissan's XTronic CVT & Subaru's Lineartronic are the same. For starters, Porsche's PDK is, at least from what I can find, a design that they worked on with and manufactured by ZF, going up to 8-speeds. There is definitely some transmission sharing going on around though, as the PDK used in for the Macan is apparently derived from Audi's "DL501". Volkswagen's DSG branded transmissions are mostly from BorgWarner, with the most infamous being a seven-speed dry clutch design, known for repeatedly failing due to mechatronic unit corrosion. There are also six-speed wet-clutch units marketed as DSG. Audi's S-Tronic branding is used on a number of dual-clutch transmission units as well, for example the newer cars built on VW group's MQB, specifically the Audi A3 for example, use the same 7-speed dry dual-clutch transmission as the aforementioned 7-speed DSG. However since Audi manufactures a wider range of cars with longitudinally mounted engines, the transmissions must be designed to match the longitudinal configuration and as such not all the Audi transmissions are identical to those used by Volkswagen as DSG. Basically the tricky bit is to try to figure out which transmissions are unique to each of the group's brands and which are shared... probably easiest way is to see which platform the model is using Many wrong info bro… haha. Porsche PDK made by ZF is 7 speed. The 8 speed is the torque converter planetary transmission offered to BMW. The VW DSG dry clutch DQ200 for the 7 speed is the one infamous is made by LuK not Borg Warner. Mechatronic didn’t corrode. The mechatronic failed due to heat dissipation problems and fluid selection issues.
Yuan 6th Gear January 26, 2016 Share January 26, 2016 having exp with vw GTI and jetta gearbox, has lead to 1 conclusion. stay away from the 7spd dsg... GTI is not using the same gearbox as the Jetta 1.4l models.
Fels 4th Gear January 26, 2016 Share January 26, 2016 Autotrans is an enclosed unit and seldom have leaking problem unlike the engine with its numerous seals and gaskets. Glad that BMW has not embrace the DSG transmission and still stick faithfully to conventional torque converter. Auto transmission or manual or torque converter or synchronizer or whatever. .. ask have numerous seals and gaskets. It is not the selection of auto or manual or semi auto that matters. It's how it's engineered and produced.Last time I was inquiring about Mk7 Golf, they were all made in Germany... Swiftgolfer 2nd Gear January 26, 2016 Share January 26, 2016 GTI is not using the same gearbox as the Jetta 1.4l models. yup. thats y the 6spd is good so far. the 7spd... haiz visited the workshop 4 times in the almost 5 yrs of driving. lucky all under warranty, but then having it give problems so many times = no confidence vote on reliability. ↡ Advertisement
