2017 Apple iPhone 8 & iPhone X

Theres another issue with iPhone x. They signed a contract with LG to diversify and not rely on Samsung for oled panels but LG is having some trouble ramping up supply.

Japan display hasn't even started manufacturing anything yet.

Apple makes roughly 80% of its revenue from pure hardware... and with a damn good margin as well... overall about 38%... but the iPhone margin is closer to 60%

With Google, almost 90% of the profits are from ad revenue. Their hardware (whether Nexus/Pixel, Nest or Fibre/Fi) is only a small blip.

It used to be that you could buy the Google Nexus/Pixel phones at competitive prices (given their high spec and performance) cos the hardware was;

1) a way for Google to bring their pure android experience... and;

2) a funnel for their google services.

But now, with these high prices for the Pixel phones, their new Chromebooks starting at over US 1,000, and don't forget the $20 USB-C to 3.5mm audio dongle (which Apple only charges $9 btw... and which is included with a new phone)...

It looks like Google wants to have the cake and eat it too...

Customers now pay premium prices for the hardware and also give unfettered access for their ad machine? Now that's insane ð

I'm not into these Google assistant or siri stuff.

The specs are also 4gb ram, 64gb or 128gb with no expandable Memory. I would rather buy a note 8.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed OLED iPhone panel supply is "controlled wholly by Samsung", which may have contributed to the $999 iPhone X's high price. In a bid to reduce its dependency on Samsung parts going forward, Apple has recently encouraged OLED production by rival suppliers like Sharp and Japan Display, while also pursuing alternative sources of NAND flash, most recently by agreeing with Bain Capital and others to acquire Toshiba's chip plant in a deal reportedly worth $17.7 billion.

I have taken out the blurb that remotely links to your assertation. Which sentence is that, which says that OLED production is currently bottlenecking the production rate of iPhone Xes? Pray tell.

Factually, all this and all Kuo was saying is that Samsung is a very strong first source supplier and Apple has tried to reduce dependence by attempting to have second source and third source suppliers in the form of Sharp and JDI.

Meanwhile, the belowmentioned link clearly states that the shipment rate of Face ID sensor (purportedly due to absymal yields) are limiting iPhone Xes in production.

LG are not supplying the OLED panels for Apple for the X

It’s completely by Samsung. LG are not expected to be part of the supply chain till 2019 if some reports are to be believed.

Completely agree about the Note 8. Even if the Pixel 2 were to be cheaper... if I was in the market for an Android phone... I’d go with the Note.

1) for the design

2) for the stylus

3) for the retail warranty support

The expandable storage... not so much... currently using only 30gb out of my 64gb 8Plus. Similar story with my MBP... using only about 180gb out of a 500gb SSD

The camera by all accounts... is pretty fantastic on the Note 8. Maybe the Pixel is still better... but not at that price, for that bland look and no retail support here.

I'm running out of space in my s6. I already deleted some of my apps. Well I have cloud storage of my photos in Dropbox. But I still prefer to keep them in a physical drive somewhere.

Maybe cos my kids are still young lah. So lot of photos...

Well... my photo library is about 100gb... and music which I’ve ripped/purchased is another 50gb.

But I don’t feel the need to have them physically on my phone.

Like you... I subscribe to cloud services that make them available when needed.

As for them to be in a physical drive somewhere... Dropbox/OneDrive, etc do keep them in physical drives... with way better redundancy than we can manage.

Even so... these services also make it easy for you to physically download the pics/music, etc to a desktop computer while still having them available on any mobile device as and when required.

I believe it’s better to have adequate space in a mobile for system apps, swaps, garbage collection, etc... than packing it with rarely accessed data.

An external SD card (depending on its quality) can read/write at ~80mbps? The flash disks on some smartphones read at 1.2gbps and write at 800mbps.

A fast internal storage is always best for me.

I like the expandable storage option cuz its easier to transfer files. Instead of plugging the phone into the computer to transfer whatever photos or videos I have, I just pull out the sd card and use it just like in a camera.

As long as my devices are within cellular or WiFi range... they sync automatically without connecting any wire to insert or SD to pull out.

Taking the SD card out of my Oly OMD to transfer to my desktop/laptop is one of my current irritants and so archaic... the current Olympus app for the phone also not so great. If it worked well... I'd ditch removing the SD card in a heartbeat.

Cloud is really convenient. That's why I dont have to rely on sdcard anymore.

iCloud and Google Photos for my photos.

Google for my contacts.

I don't store files on my phone but I use Google Sheets for personal spreadsheet usage.

My concern is on data usage. I don't have many GB of mobile data to begin with

I guess that you don't have much videos. I use mine mainly for videos so anything wireless takes quite a long time. Most of my shots are videos rather than photos so syncing this way not very efficient.

Same with the blackvue dash cam in my car as well... damn pain removing the SD card to transfer. The WiFi on the dash cam is broken it was so damn easy when it used to work.

Nowadays I just buy whats around $500 mid tier andriod and use. Serve my need well and I do not need to get a contract to be tied down to the operator's nonsense.

Nowadays all the mid tier phones are quite good already, makes me wonder is there a need to use such high end phones nowadays when most are just using to suft net, social media and take pictures.

Wait... are we talking about consumer videos? Like a minute here or there with your smartphone?

If it's those... my video count for the last 3 years is about 550... most are for between 30 secs to a minute. File size between 60mb to 120mb.

And these are uploaded in the background once I'm done taking them. And I'll find them on my both desktop and  laptop library before I even get back home.

My main issue is storage space for like videos or music files or Bluetooth to the car audio. Somehow my car doesn't seem to accept thumb drives well. Haha like I'm going Taiwan soon on budget flight. Haha have to plan for entertainment of the kids.

ðð¼ I pay $4/month for 200gb iCloud storage. And now with iOS11... can share with family. So I've shared that with my daughter as well... her photo library is 50gb ð¨ anyway... still have about 30gb free after the photo library and backups, etc.

I agree about data usageð Recently downgraded from 6gb to 3gb... and found that the photo library had eaten 900mb in 2 weeks syncing stuff. Have currently switched cellular off for photo library... so it only sync when within WiFi range ð

That's cheap. I've used about 200gb of my 1 tb Dropbox. Paying around 12 per month

For music I pay $10 per month for Spotify and I Bluetooth to my car for listening. I download Extreme Quality but it doesn't take up much space yet

For photos and videos I upload FOC to Google Photos and I have 50GB iCloud as backup

Lol the music I'm referring to is like kiddy songs or the Yamaha music class songs. I'm fine with the radio.

My Dslr photos are backed up to Dropbox. They are raw data files so it's quite big. I didn't know default Icloud so big. I want full resolution photos to be saved so I don't use Google photos. But I rec everyone else to use them. It's like whether u want lossless audio vs just regular 128 kbit mp3.

Yeah some of my friends are on Spotify.
