Think only Tommy can escape fixing.

Citing statistics from a handbook published by the Lien Centre [for Social Innovation] at SMU [singapore Management University], Prof Koh noted that "there are between 100,000 and 140,000 households that live in absolute poverty ... meaning, they are unable to afford basic needs."

"In addition, according to the handbook, there are between 20 to 35 per cent of our households that live in relative poverty," he added, which means that "their incomes are less than 50 per cent of the median income."

"Our median income today is $4,400, so 50 per cent means $2,200," he highlighted.

Thirdly, Prof Koh argued that "there are too many workers in Singapore today who do not earn a living wage".

$2,200 gross is about $1,750 per month before employee CPF deduction and that mean a take home pay of just $1,400. If that is the only income for a family of 4 let say, than it is really near poverty.

And this statement really make me laugh...

"I aspire to a situation in which every working man and woman in Singapore can earn a living wage. What is a living wage? A living wage is a wage that enables the worker his or her family to live in dignity and in material sufficiency.

another angle...

the 100-140k families, i bet they are not PR or new Citizens... they will not get PR if they are poor. There are many complains of low SES folks marrying foreigners but unable to get PR for their spouse...

the PRs and new citizens, they will also be the ones occupying the upper storeys of the income ladder... poor wont be accepted in the first place.

If the data were to remove them, the median and mean of local income is likely to decrease even further.

statistics play.

assume red are non local born income level.

sample size is 11.

1 2 2 3 4 5 5 6 7 8 9

median income is 5.

remove the reds, median drops to 4.

why they dont wanna to show the local born data?.. think that there is the smoking gun.

maybe they need to shutdown SMU for peddling fake news.

or they need to remove tommy for distributing fake article. sheesh......

He’s just carrying on his father legacy.

seems quite a few who were from lky time have been openly critical of current affairs .... those that keep quiet must be even more.

Well, if you don't sing the same tune, there is no concert hall for you. The gap is simply too wide and the top is still day dreaming. Like Ah jib found out too late to even keep the bags and cash because his buddies told him everything in control. Haha

No Jibby hid the bags already.

The ones they found are just the ones he wanted them to find.

Faster apologise to Jibby for your fake news.

Compared to Lim Boon Heng, the comparison is even more stark.

At least he knows that FT buys 2 pieces of land back home with his $600 pm salary. Wonder why he didn't buy singapore property.

This arrangement is logistically easier in Singapore compared to say the POTUS or PUTIN.

Then the burning question should be:

Why our leaders are not interested to do such a surprised visit?

Afraid of what they will see or hear

OR

They are just interested to remain in their ivory towers barricaded by their "fake news" law?

Families with income of $1,900 or below can apply for vouchers at CCs until Oct 31, 2019

More than 150,000 households have applied for government vouchers to cushion the impact of an increase in public transport fares as of Dec 12, a month after applications opened on Nov 12.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the People's Association (PA) gave the update in a joint statement yesterday, adding that grassroots leaders have reached out to needy residents to inform them about the vouchers and help them with applications.

The vouchers, of $30 each, can be used to buy or top up fare cards or buy monthly concession passes.

To help needy families cope with the fare adjustment, the Government announced earlier that it will disburse $9 million from the Public Transport Fund, or 300,000 vouchers. This will be the largest number of Public Transport Vouchers available in a single exercise.

The Public Transport Council announced in October that adjustments to public transport fares will kick in from Saturday (Dec 29).

Bus and train fares will rise by six cents per trip, while single-trip train fares and adult cash bus fares will rise by 10 cents, among other changes.

Part-time relief childcare teacher Selina Goh, 58, who takes the train or bus to her workplace or the wet market about five times a week, has applied for the voucher.

Ms Goh, who lives with her husband, an odd-job worker, said: "I do not enjoy the benefits of the senior citizen concession card as I am not 60 years old yet. These vouchers from the Government will be useful and help lower the transport cost for me."

Households with an income of $1,900 or below, or a per capita income of not more than $650, are eligible for the vouchers. Applications end on Oct 31 next year. If successful, each household will receive one voucher.

Those who need more vouchers can apply through community centres or clubs.

The Citizens' Consultative Committees will assess each application and have the discretion to help deserving cases who marginally miss the criteria, said the MOT and PA.

Residents may approach their local community centres if they have any queries, they added.

A version of this article appeared in the print edition of The Straits Times on December 25, 2018, with the headline '150,000 households apply for $30 public transport vouchers'. Print Edition | Subscribe

now.... either Tommy is a bloody fakenewser... or someone in ST is getting "reassigned" for essentially saying things are even worst than Tommy says.

maybe most of those 150000 households are actually in bukit timah.... applying for their maids.

then again... more likely  the real number is actually much higher than acceptable for SPH to publish...

Goodnes, 150k household

Family of 4 will make 600k people like 10% of population.

I thought the media reported less than 2 % live in such condition?

So do we actually have more people who were exploited for their labour?

Ours got no chance at all lah. They are lead by the nose even what to eat and wear. They have to sing the same songs. It is a routine job for the high pay.

Just look around who is accompanying them when they visit their sites? People who has no business at all during normal days but turn up for the event. It is a staged show where people living there don't have a chance to participate. Time to consider removing all these RC and CC members
