Safety Features Discussion

I do not own a "smart car" so would like to have more info and understanding of the present car safety features. Do correct me if I am wrong.

*Adaptive Cruise Contro (ACC) = on top of cruising at constant speed, could slow down or speed up with the radar that detect front car relative speed.

*Blind spot Monitorong system = only works when car travels at above certain speed. (50km/h??)

*I sensing, Front assist = zero experience. Anyone dared to try to walk across the path of the oncoming vehicle, or the car did slowed down or E brake when too near the front vehicle with no action from driver.

This feature works at all speed and stationary.

For my skoda the blind spot assist works above 10kmh

for ACC from some of group members who bought facelifted version said ut works as it will slow down when the car infront slow down

I use ACC in the tunnel often. But what I dont like about it is the braking it is programmed to brake at a selected distance between your car and the car in front, it can be quite abrupt, I will override it by pressing the gas pedal but not too much. Speeding up is imo a tad too slow. There is no AI in the system. The system is pretty much pre-program. The system doesnt cut off if you accelerate, it will gradually go back to the speed you have set, it will only cut off when you hit the brakes. Similar to what the cruise control does. It is imo not "smart". Mine doesnt work at speeds below 40km/hr. A message will appear and tells me to ownself brake. To me it is an upgrade from cruise control nevertheless.

I rather not have the blind spot thing. It is distracting, again this thing has no AI. I will still turn my head to see the blind spot even if the system is there. I dont trust it.

Front collision warning is also annoying(constant beepings) for me but it did save me once. I think I didnt apply enough braking force and it did it for me. Too many idiots on the road. If only all cars on the road have this system.

There are 2 version of ACC, full and partial.

Full => from ZERO km/h.

Partial => from certain km/h onwards. Usually 30km/h. Below that, it will disengage. Driver has to take over.

For ACC, you can set the distance btw cars. From most conservative to most aggressive.

Although the concept is the same, how & when each feature is a activated differs slightly with the manufacturers.

For me, they are all nice to have features and you get used to having them. I like the blind spot monitoring system on my ride which is just a little yellow triangle in the corner of my side mirror, most useful during rainy days for me.

Front collision warning had a loud beeping sound in my previous ride but not in my current one which is less annoying, it does it's job very well and sometimes too well if i should say, had mine activated a couple of times previously (works on both pedestrians & vehicles) although i was well aware of the situation (i'm not an earlier braker/slow down driver). So the sensitivity of the system may annoy some drivers, best if your car allows you to turn the feature off if you don't want it.

End of the day, all these are nice to have features but as drivers we should always trust our own instincts/judgement, stay alert and not be over dependent on technology.

Ever had a car equipped with all those features...useless at best...i mean use less is best becos full self-awareness is the bestest😁

Pay $$ for it already, why use less?
It should be fully utilised.

Driver ability does not improve with less use of drivers aids.

Over reliance on techno aids is detrimental to muscle reflexes...ever read about accidents becos drivers thought the blis and auto brake were still working...😅

I take train and buses most times nowadays...dont wish to lose the ability and opportunity to 'stand firmly' next to a syt...😁

This is a clear sign of bad drivers.

To improve your reflexes, you have to drive fast and furious 🤭

Strange that I tested on a Seat and the blind spot did not work, as indicated on the dashboard icon where it was orange and not green in colour. It would only turn green above certain speed, like 50 and above??

The sales gut also has no answer to my query.

Agreed with your point. But with kids now grown up and start driving my car, I have to put on a poker face while they drive. I can't be looking tense and telling them to slow down all the time.

I need such tech gizmos to keep them safe. The car included.

Sometimes you may not even be seating at their side when they are driving.

My personal take.

ACC: Not really useful, unless when combined with "auto lane correction" + Full start stop. A little like semi-autonomous driving, follow the front car through curvy roads, stops at the lights and continue to follow the front car when it moves.

Blind spot monitor: Don't really find it useful because when I change lane, i usually turn my head to see, it's a muscle memory programmed into me and quite hard to unlearn.

Front anti-collision (or whatever brands call them): Very useful. Even the most experienced drivers may be distracted/lapse of judgement. It saved me once when I was moving off at the lights. The front car suddenly braked hard at the same instance i took my eyes off the road to change my a/c settings.

Rear cross traffic (or whatever brands call them): More useful for Malaysia driving when u often find yourself parked head-in.

The most important is auto braking.

Kid runs across the road by the time you see the car is braking already.

:D

Also quite useful against scammers who like to run in front of your car and fake injury 😁
