Hesitation when moving off at D

Been having this intermittent problem with my 12-year-old Sylphy: Gearbox seems to take a longer time to engage when moving off in D mode. Happens only at start of journey after the car has been parked for a while; don't have this problem when moving off at traffic lights in the middle of a journey. Sometimes have to get around it by putting tranny in 2 or 1 mode and then shifting to D. Reverse mode is ok. ATF and filter were changed almost two years ago. What could be causing this? Thanks for any help.

what is the mileage?

Order of checking. seems to point to 1st point as it happens only when cold. ATF expands quite a bit when warmed up.

1. check fluid level

2. try to change ATF again

3. overhaul gearbox

looks like the solenoids or seals in the valve body.

Mileage is under 180K km. ATF volume within range. Will check again.

there is a possiblity that the trans needs a service, about 2k to 3k, downtime 3 days . go get a transmission specialist shop for assessment, they would be able to tell . Otherwise, this problem may get more and more severe, till the car will not change gear at times till completely unable to drive.

@KklimIs there any abnormal sound from the engine bay? Sort of like a mechanical grinding noise?

Likely to be the fluid pump that is faulty in the torque converter. FYI cvt gearbox also uses a torque converter.

Mine is auto, not CVT.

Engine has been louder since top overhead (top gasket blew) 2 years ago.

@KklimIf not abnormal (kind of grinding/rattling) sound, then hopefully the cvt transmission should still be alright, and most likely some kind of connecter to activate the mode worn.

Because my 13 yrs Nissan Latio on cvt some months ago last year its gearbox spoilt and I so I de-registered the car. Initially I heard that afore-mentioned grinding noise from the engine bay area that got sound the faster I drove. Even in N mode the sound was audible but low. Car was serviced on schedule. After a few months the sound became too intrusive and unbearable. Bought the car to workshop for diagnosis and it pin-pointed that it was the cvt gearbox and that the bearings were probable broken. Replacement set (re-conditioned unit from Japan) would cost between $2500 to $3500 estd. Ultimately decided to scrap the veh.
